GC softball suffers setbacks to Colfax and E/PC

Victory continued to elude the Glenwood City softball team.
After racking up double digit wins the past few seasons, the Hilltoppers young and inexperienced crew is finding it difficult to get that first ‘W”.
Without much of an offensive spark, Glenwood City was blanked 10-0 in Colfax last Thursday, April 28.
Just 24 hours later, the Toppers were finally able to generate some hits and runs only to fall a run short in a 10-11 loss in Elmwood to the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City.
Those most recent setbacks have Glenwood City without a win in five contests this season.
This next seven days will be filled with games for the Hilltoppers who hosted Elmwood/Plum City in a short turnaround on Monday and Colfax on Tuesday. After going to Durand this Thursday, Glenwood City will welcome Boyceville on Friday and Mondovi next Monday, May 9.
Colfax
If you can’t hit the ball, you can’t get on base and score runs, and without runs its hard to win.
That’s just the predicament the Hilltoppers have often found themselves in this season and their April 28 game in Colfax was no different.
Glenwood City was only able to muster a pair of hits – singles by Brooklynn Brite and Isabel Davis – against Colfax junior hurler Mallory Field who struck out seven Toppers and walked just one to get the win in the Vikings’ 10-0 shut out in six innings.
Meanwhile, Colfax touched Glenwood City pitchers Maddie Klatt, who started, and Jenna McCarthy for a dozen hits. Klatt took the loss giving up five runs on seven hits in five innings of work with three strike outs and a walk. McCarthy allowed five Colfax hits and runs in just a third of an inning.
After scoring a run in the first, Colfax clung to a 1-0 lead until it plated four runs in the fourth and added five more in the sixth.
“We aren’t hitting the ball well,” said Glenwood City head coach Matthew Schutz.
“Dribbles on the infield and flying it out doesn’t put us on bags or score runs,” he added.
Elmwood/Plum City
The following day in Elmwood, the Lady Hilltoppers dug an early hole, trailing 7-1 after one inning of play.
But, Glenwood City did not give in.
The Toppers scored twice in the third and two more times in the fourth to close to within 7-5.
Elmwood/Plum City used a four-run fourth to open its advantage to 11-5.
Glenwood City again scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to shave the deficit to two.
Then in their final at bat, Glenwood City loaded the bases with not outs. Jenna McCarthy, who had a base rap to open the seventh, scored to get the Toppers to 10-11. But the Wolves were able to get the next three Toppers out to end the contest.
“We finally hit the ball and scored runs,” said Schutz.
“A 7-run inning in the first for Elmwood hurt us, but we slowly got back those runs and more right up to he seventh inning,” he continued.
“We had the tie and go ahead runs on the bags when the final out occurred,” Schutz added. “I was glad that the girls never gave up.”
Glenwood City finished with eight hits. McCarthy went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Sydney Grant and Alex Peterson added a pair of hits. Grant had a double among her two hits and scored three times. Peterson tallied two RBIs and walked twice.
The Wolves finished with 16 hits including three doubles and a triple and 11 RBIs.
Maddie Klatt took the loss giving up 13 hits for 11 runs while striking out one and walking one. McCarthy threw two inning allowing a hit but no runs.
