Strong pitching performance helps Mounders earn shut out

PLUM CITY — Elk Mound pitchers combined to allow just a single hit in its conference and season opener against Elmwood/Plum City last Monday, April 11.
Starting pitcher Kaden Russo threw three hitless innings, striking out seven and walking just one batter. Avery Kaanta relieved Russo in the fourth inning and allowed just one hit and struck out a pair in two innings of work.
Meanwhile, Elk Mound’s offense used seven hits and eight walks to bring in 11 runs as it blanked E/PC in Plum City 11-0 in five innings.
Ethan Johnson and Ryan Bartig led the Mounders with two hits each in four plate appearances. Both of Johnson’s hits went for doubles as he finished with three RBIs and a run scored. Bartig also had a double among his two hits and accounted for a run scored. The Mounders other three hits – all singles – were turned in by Joseph Javanovich, Kamron Diermeier and Avery Kaanta.
Diermeier also had a pair of stolen bases with Javanovich and Carter Garnett each adding one.
Elk Mound broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with three runs. Then in the fourth, the Mounders plated seven more runs for a 10-0 lead. Elk Mound scored its final run in the fifth.
The contest came to an end in the bottom half of the fifth when the Wolves failed to score.
If mother nature finally cooperates, Elk Mound is slated to played three games this week that began with a road game in Glenwood City yesterday (Tuesday, April 19). Spring Valley and Colfax will come to Elk Mound on Thursday and Friday, respectively. Elk Mound will then host its third straight home game next Monday, April 25 against Mondovi before hitting the road for a game in Durand on Tuesday, April 26.
