ALTOONA — In between snow and rain showers, the Elk Mound boys’ and girls’ track and field teams were able to compete in its first outdoor meet of the season last Monday, April 11 with both squads finishing in the top four at the Altoona Invitational.
With a second, five thirds and several fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishes, the Mounder men took third at the 11-school meet after scoring 91 points. The Lady Mounders finished fourth with 83 points led by a pair of first-place showings by Lydia Levra and Aleya Hadenfeldt.
Fall Creek won both the boys’ (182.5) and girls’ (158.5) team titles while Prescott came in second with its boys tallying 148 and the girls 123 points.
Junior Aleya Hadenfeldt and sophomore Lydia Levra were the only Mounder thinclads to claim a first place in the meet. Hadenfeldt won the 100 meter dash in :13.93 and was fourth in the 200 meters (:29.23) while Levra took gold in the 200 meters with a winning sprint of :28.55. Levra was also second in the long jump with a leap of 14’ 6” and placed fourth in the 100 meters (:14.13).
Senior Olivia Schreiber took third in the triple jump (29’ 2”) and seventh in the long jump. Junior Kate Mohr placed fourth in the high jump, fifth in the 100 meter high hurdles and ninth in the 300 meter low hurdles and junior Grace Roder was fourth in the discus and seventh in the shot put.
The girls also placed and scored points in all four relays – finishing third in the 4×100-meter, fourth in the 4×200 and sixth in both the 4×400 and 4×800.
The Elk Mound boys also scored points in all of the relay events, taking a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 4×200-meter and 4×800 events, fifth in the 4×400 and sixth in the 4×100.
Freshman Grant Mueller had the boys’ top individual finish taking second in the triple jump with a best effort of 37’ 4”. He also garnered fourth in the 110 m high hurdles and fifth in the long jump.
Another freshman, Brooks Burcaw, placed third in both the 110-meter high and 300 intermediate hurdling events. Also earning thirds were junior Tobey Westcott in the pole vault (he also came in eighth in the 300 hurdles), freshman Parker Dutzke in the high jump and junior Ian Hazen in the 1,600 meter run while classmate Aiden Schiferl was fourth in the 1,600 m.
Senior Will King placed and scored points in all three jumping events taking fifth in the triple jump and a pair of sevenths in the high and long jumps. Fellow senior Korbin Verdon placed fifth in the 100 meter dash, sophomore Tyler Gagner finished sixth in the 400 meters as did junior Jackson Gehweiler in the high jump.
Weather permitting, Elk Mound is scheduled for a pair of meets this week. They were at Eleva-Strum yesterday (April 19) and will run, jump and throw in Arcadia Thursday. Next Tuesday, April 26, the Mounders are to compete at Baldwin-Woodville High School.
