Lady Mounders hang on to defeat EPC in softball opener

PLUM CITY — Despite being outhit 11 to eight by Elmwood/Plum City, the Elk Mound softball team found a way to earn a 9-7 road win over the Wolves in the teams’ season and conference opener that was played in Plum City Monday, April 11.
Elmwood/Plum City took an early 2-0 advantage after scoring single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings.
Elk Mound scored once in the top of the third and then took a 4-2 advantage after plating three runs in the fourth. The Mounders added another in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth to up their lead to 7-2.
The Wolves scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the Mounders lead to two at 7-4.
Thankfully, the Mounders got both those runs back in the top of the seventh because the Wolves scored three runs in the bottom of the inning before Elk Mound could retire the side and end the game with the score 9-7.
Three Mounders finished with two hits each. McKenna Diermeier went two-for-four including a double to finish with three RBIs, a walk and a run scored. Kallee Rhude also tallied a double among her two hits and had two walks and scored a run. Ellie Schiszik had a pair of hits in three plate appearances and finished with an RBI and two runs scored.
The other two hits went to Lauren Garnett, who had a double, an RBI, drew three bases on balls and scored a run; and Chloe Dummer, who also doubled, scored twice and had a pair of RBIs.
Diermeier stole four bases, Schiszik two and Morgyn Hallum and Rhude one each.
Hailey Meyer threw all seven innings for the Mounders to earn the win. She scattered 11 hits that resulted in seven runs, two of which were earned, struck out ten and issued just one walk.
The Lady Mounders played in Glenwood City Tuesday, will be at Mondovi this Thursday before returning home to face rival Colfax on Friday. Elk Mound will host Mondovi next Monday, April 25 and head to Durand the following day, Tuesday, April 16.
