ELK MOUND — After last Tuesday’s much anticipated showdown against Colfax was postponed until this Saturday, January 22 due to COVID issues on the Vikings’ squad, the Elk Mound girls’ basketball team was left with just a single contest last week.
In that January 14 conference game, the Lady Mounders and freshman Ellie Schiszik dominated the visiting Cardinals of Spring Valley. Schiszik dumped in 33 points, all of her 11 makes coming from behind the three-point arc, to lead Elk Mound to an 82-33 crushing of the Cardinals.
Elk Mound held a commanding 49-14 advantage at the intermission and went on to put another 33 points on the scoreboard in the second half compared to 19 from Spring Valley.
“We shot the basketball very well,” said Elk Mound head coach Jordan Kongshaug. “I felt we moved the ball effectively to get good looks, and we knocked them down.”
Especially Schiszik who’s display of long range accuracy included eight triples in the first half alone with three more coming in the second half.
Madisyn Mohr and Tori Blaskowski also scored in double digits for the Mounders with 13 points apiece. Brooke Emery and Lydia Levra each finished with six points, Allie Roder added four, Olivia Schindler had three, and Stella Rhude and Chloe Dummer each chipped in for two points.
Halie Thomas tallied nine points and Paige Vanasse had seven to lead the Cardinals.
Elk Mound also made five of its eight foul shots while Spring Valley took just four attempts making only one.
Elk Mound improved to 4-0 in the Dunn-St. Croix and 11-2 overall with the victory.
The Mounders will host a trio of conference games this week which began this past Monday against winless Glenwood City. Elmwood/Plum City will be in town on Thursday evening and then Elk Mound welcomes rival Colfax in a battle for first place on Saturday evening, January 22.
The Mounders then travel to Glenwood City next Tuesday, January 25.
