MONDOVI — Ian Hazen of Elk Mound ran a pretty good race to finish in second place at the Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet held at The Valley Golf Course in Mondovi October 14.
The only problem was he was running against the Division 3 defending state champion Parker Schneider of Durand. Schneider won the race in 17:02 while Hazen came in at 17:30 to lead the Mounders to a third-place team finish. There were 65 individuals and six full teams in the competition.
The Mounders Ellie Schiszik also ran a very competitive race finishing third behind Molly Heidorn of Colfax and Courtney Stadter of Mondovi. Heidorn won her third straight conference title in a time of 20:42 while Stadter came in at 21:12 and Schiszik was clocked in 21:27 as the Mounder girls placed fourth out of seven full teams with 55 individuals competing.
Coach Jeremiah Fredrickson took advantage of the unlimited runners he could have and ran 16 boys in the contest. After Hazen came in, Trae Schaefer was eighth in a time of 18:57 followed by Caleb Beskow in 14th at 19:31.
The first seven runners are named first team all-conference and runners 8-14 are second team all-conference.
Cason Pederson placed 18th in 20:14, Jesse Moyer was 24th at 20:42 and Bodie Folczyk came in for 29th in 21:08 with Cooper Reese just behind him for 30th at 21:28.
A whole slug of Mounders finished together including Carter Sundeen (38th), Jackson Gehweiler (40th), AJ Miller (41st), Aiden Schiferl (42nd), Evan Lauer (43rd), Walker Banaszak (44th), Tobey Westcott (48th), Will King (49th) and Nels Tanula (62nd).
There was a big gap between Schisik and the next Mounder, Elsja Meiger who was 24th at 24:19. Marley King was close behind her in 27th at 24:47 and Lilly Tanula was 30th in 25:35. Aleya Hadenfeldt was 36th in 26:29, Kyra Hadenfeldt was in at 26:29 for 36th place, Madisyn Mohr placed 39th in a time of 26:45 and Carly Mohr was clocked at 29:15 for 50th place.
Elk Mound will compete in the Division 2 sectional meet this Saturday in Rice Lake. State will be held Saturday, October 30 at the Ridges in Wisconsin Rapids.
“I had hoped we would finish higher on the boys side, COVID took out our #4 runner Tyler Gagner and sickness knocked Aiden our usual #2 back. If they had been able to run their races I think we were in the mix to take it. But we did have some others really step up and run tough. The girls finished where we were hoping, I think with what we have and what’s coming up the girl’s are in a very good spot,” said head coach Jeremiah Fredrickson.
“We’re excited about our chances at sectionals and just hopeful to get everyone back healthy and ready to run great races Saturday,” he concluded.
