The Elk Mound volleyball team will head into the regional tournament on a positive note after winning their final two matches of the regular season.
The Mounders defeated Spring Valley 3-0 on Tuesday, October 12 and two days later had a very competitive match against Elmwood/Plum City and won 3-1. Both games were on the road and both were Dunn-St. Croix Conference matches.
The Mounders finished 6-1 in conference play with their only loss coming to Colfax who went on to win the conference. Elk Mound (#9) played at Prescott (#8) in the opening round of the Division 2 regional tournament last night, October 19. A win will send them into a Thursday, October 21 semifinal match against the top-seeded Panthers from St. Croix Central.
Spring Valley
The Mounders won 25-20, 25-13 and 25-13 in the October 12 match to stay one game behind Colfax in conference play. Stella Rhude slammed 18 kills in the contest to lead in that department while McKenna Diermeier smacked 14 kills with four service aces with 22 digs. Kate Mohr added five kills and Sierra Simpson had three of her own while Issie Hollister played a solid defense with 19 digs. Tori Blaskowski set her teammates up quite well with 37 of the Mounder’s 39 assists, and also had eight digs from the back row. Brooke Emery added six digs and Gracie Carlton added a block at the net.
Elmwood/Plum City
The Wolves were coming off a five-set loss to Colfax just two days earlier in a contest where they had match point in the fifth set but couldn’t pull off the win. If they had won, there would have been a three-way tie with themselves, Elk Mound and Colfax in the D-SC Conference heading into the final match for all three teams. As it turned out, Colfax defeated Glenwood City and the Mounders and Wolves battled it out for second place. Elk Mound won the battle by winning the first set 25-18, but dropped the second one 25-22. They won a close third set 26-24 and closed it out with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
Diermeier and Rhude combined for 45 of the 51 Mounder kills with 27 for Diermeier and 18 for Rhude. Blaskowski had 44 of the Mounder’s 45 assists to lead her team and Carlton scored on three blocked shots. Defensively, Diermeier had 22 digs, Hollister 21 and Emery five and Lauren Garnett added five digs and four serving aces.
