The Glenwood City girls’ track and field team won three relays and four individual events but it wasn’t enough to overcome Mondovi as the Lady Toppers placed second with 138.5 points while the Mondovi Buffaloes finished with 163.5 to claim the championship at the 2021 Dunn-St. Croix Conference meet held in Colfax last Tuesday, June 8.
The girls had led through 13 events but were overtaken by the Buffaloes late in the meet.

The Hilltopper boys’ team was fifth with 82 points with Mondovi also winning the boys’ team title with 163.5 points. The top eight places were counted for team points.
The meet was moved back an hour due to blistering hot conditions with the temperature still around 90 degrees at 5:00 p.m. Later in the meet, there was a threat of a storm on the horizon but officials kept the meet going to get it completed.
“I thought our teams competed very well in the weather conditions,” said Glenwood City head coach Carrie Blanchard.
“Mondovi just had a few more kids place in a few more events then we did,” she added. “Overall, it was a great team effort (by both squads). I am very proud of how well the athletes competed and handled the weather.”
Despite the heat and humidity, Glenwood City had several personal bests for the season and set a new school record in the girls’ 4×200 meter relay.
The foursome of Maddie Booth, Brenna Schwartz, Hailey Hannah, and Marie Garcia ran a 1:52.64 in the 4×200 meter relay to claim the conference crown and break a 30-year-old school record of 1:53.40 set in 1991 by Amy Steffen, Sonya Schug, Nicole Jackelen, and Becca Meyer.
The Topper girls also won the 4×800 meter relay with Gabby Moede, Lexi Wannemacher, Bella Simmons, and Kinzie Strong in a season’s best time of 11:01.81, and the 4×400 meter relay which consisted of Bella Rassbach, Kinzie Strong, Bella Simmons, and Wannemacher with a time of 4:24.94. The Toppers’ 4×100 meter female quartet of Booth, Schwartz, Hannah, and Garcia just missed out on sweeping the relay events when they finished second (:52.84) to Elk Mound by a mere two-hundredths of a second.
In addition, freshman Ryeah Oehlke won the long jump with a leap of 15’ 10.25”, and seniors Lexi Wannemacher and Yasmin Mendez claimed individuals golds as well. Wannemacher won the 300 meter low hurdles in :49.22 and Yasmin Mendez dominated the throwing events winning both the discus with a throw of 100’ 10” and the shot put with a throw of 34’ 2”. It was Mendez’ third consecutive conference championship in the shot put.

All four of the boys relay teams finished the day in second place as did junior Austin Nelson who ran a personal best of :51.17 in the 400 meters for the silver medal.
Other individual second-place finishes went to seniors Marie Garcia in the 100 meters (:13.14) and Bella Rassbach in the long jump (15’ 7.5”).
Rassbach also took a third in the 400 meters, running a personal best time of 1:03.75. Taking home bronze medals also were: juniors Bella Simmons in the 1600 meter run and Brenna Schwartz in the pole vault, and sophomores Blake Wakeling in the pole vault, with a person best of 9’, and Brady Klatt in the discus. Wakeling also set a personal best of 5’ 4” in the high jump to finish in fifth.
