James Palmer is having an unparalleled season as he set yet another record for the UW-Stout Blue Devils baseball team.
The senior left-handed pitcher from Boyceville struck out eight batters, breaking Stout’s single-season strikeout record in the process, during the Blue Devils 2-0 win over UW-Oshkosh in the first round of the 2021 WIAC Baseball Championship at Nelson Field in Menomonie Wednesday, May 21.
Palmer finished the Oshkosh contest with eight strikeouts to run his season total to 76, one more than Ron Yessa tossed during the 1997 season. He pitched six and two-thirds innings and gave up seven hits and four walks, while facing 30 batters in the tournament contest.
Palmer, who improved his mound record to 7-3 with the win, currently has an 1.83 ERA (Earned Run Average), the best on the team, and his 76 Ks are 43 more than any other member of the Blue Devils’ pitching staff.
Palmer pitched the school’s first complete-game no-hitter against UW-Platteville on May 4 and has twice been named the WIAC Athlete of the Week this season as well as the National Pitcher of the Week.
Stout (22-17) faced top-seeded UW-Stevens Point Friday, May 21 at Whitewater.
