GLENWOOD CITY — In their second outing of the season, the Glenwood City Hilltoppers’ Track and Field teams each took first place in their home quadrangular meet held on Thursday, May 6th.
For the girls, it was an easy victory with ten first-place finishes and a team score of 92, a whopping 54 points ahead of the second-place team from Elmwood/Plum City who finished with 38 points. Spring Valley was third with 34 points while Durand only garnered 27 points.
The boys took eight first-place finishes and scored 78 team points to edge out Spring Valley who put up 74 points. Durand was next with 44 and Elmwood/Plum City was fourth with 37 points.
For the Lady Toppers, it was repeat performances for Yasmin Mendez, Bella Rassbach, and Lexi Wannemacher as they came in first in their events. Mendez was first in the shot put with a throw of 34-00.5 and first in the discus with a distance of 93-04. While Rassbach jumped 15 feet 9 inches to take first in the long jump and Wannemacher ran a :51.26 in the 300meter low hurdles.
Isabella Simmons easily won the 1600m with a time of 5:58.47 and freshman Rileigh Schwartz improved her time from last week to win the 100m high hurdles in a time of :20.97.
The Topper Ladies also swept the relay events besting last week’s results when they took three of the four relays. The team of Maddie Booth, Marie Garcia, Brenna Schwartz, and Hailey Hannah won both the 4x100m relay and the 4x200m relay with times of :58.9 and 1:55.75, respectively. In the 4x400m relay, it was Isabella Simmons, Kinzie Strong, Lexi Wannemacher and Bella Rassbach with a time of 4:36.19 and in the 4x800m relay it was Gabby Moede, Natasha DeSmith, Isabella Simmons, and Kinzie Strong taking first with a time of 11:47.88.
Austin Nelson logged in a repeat performance in the 400m when he took first place with a time of :53.04. Will Eggert also reclaimed his first place title in the triple jump with a distance of 30-02.5.
In other field events, freshmen Malachi Keller and Blake Wakeling took top honors with improved scores from their first outing. Keller high jumped 5 feet 10 inches, a four inch improvement over last week. Wakeling soared to 8 feet 9 inches to clear the bar in the pole vault, a one foot, nine-inch improvement from last week.
Elek Anderson rounded out the individual first place performances with a 5:23.83 run in the 1600m.
The team of Will Eggert, Brady Klatt, Wyatt Thompson, and Austin Nelson repeated as the winners of the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:56.09. Thompson, Eggert along with Cody Hanson and Malachi Keller took top honors in the 4x100m relay in :48.87. In the 4x800m relay it was John Hager, Anthony Nelson, Elek Anderson, and Austin Nelson who came in first with a time of 10:00.56.
After the meet, head coach Carrie Blanchard remarked, “I am extremely proud of how hard the kids are working in practice this year. It is starting to show in meets. We saw several events where our athletes have improved their times, jumps, throws from last week.”
The Toppers head to Boyceville next Thursday, May 13th for a quad meet that also has them facing Colfax and Elk Mound for the first time this year.
