STOP, JUMP AND DROP — Glenwood City’s Ryeah Oehlke (#22) pulled up in the lane and made this late second-half jump shot with three Elk Mound defenders surrounding her. Ryeah Oehlke finished with 14 points as the Hilltoppers nearly upset the Mounders, falling just short by a score of 58-54 in the January 29 D-SC girls’ basketball contest. —photo by Shawn DeWitt

The Glenwood City Hilltoppers girls’ basketball team had two games this past week and although they didn’t win either of them they played well and continue to work hard.
First up was a game against the conference’s number one squad, the Colfax Vikings, on Monday, January 25th where the Hilltoppers lost 53-77. Then on Friday, Glenwood City hosted the third-place Mounders from Elk Mound and lost a close one 54-58.
The girls have three games this week to finish out the regular season. They played Mondovi on Monday, February 1st and will play Elmwood/Plum City on Thursday the 4th and then again on Saturday afternoon, February 6th in a game that was postponed from December 18th.
Glenwood City drew the number three seed in its WIAA Division 4 regional bracket and will host #6 Shell Lake in a Tuesday, February 9 quarterfinal contest. The winner will advance to play in Webster on Friday, February 12 against the #2 Lady Tigers.
Glenwood City is currently fifth in the Dunn-St. Croix with a 4-7 record and is 5-12 overall.
Colfax
The game started out back-and-forth, according to head coach Carly Kittilson. Glenwood City did a great job executing its offense early in the game. Unfortunately, the Vikings were too hard to contain and they pulled ahead to take an eleven-point lead into the locker room at 40-29.
The Toppers came out in the second half and cut that lead down to six. Here again, the Vikings proved too tough for the Lady Toppers and then outscored them 37-24 in the half to win 77-53.
“I was happy with our team’s effort and helping each other on defense,” remarked Kittilson. She praised the play of freshman Ryeah Oehlke noting she had a great night shooting. “It was nice to see her step up with confidence to get some things done.”
For the night Ryeah led the Toppers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Bella Rassbach followed with 13 points and Kendall Schutz had 11. Maddie Oehlke pulled down nine rebounds and Delaine Fayerweather came up with four steals.

Elk Mound
“What a good game!” was Kittilson’s response after the game when the Mounders came to town this past Friday, January 29th.
“Our girls played a great first half, having the lead by 13 at one point and just continuing to work hard every play,” she added.
Kittilson thought that her team did a nice job of working the ball around and had some nice transition points against the Mounders’ press.
However, the Lady Tops let that lead slip away and by the end of the first half they were down by one point, 28-29.
Coming out after half time the Lady Tops didn’t let up and the game was back-and-forth until the end where the Toppers fell just short of the win.
“We did some nice things with our press and slowing their offense down,” commented Kittilson. She gave credit to the Mounders’ Tori Blaskowski and Stella Rhude for keeping them going and having very nice games. “They both made some tough shots against our defense.”
For her Lady Tops, Kittilson was full of praises in how they played, “Bella Rassbach, Ryeah Ohelke, and Maddie Ohelke stepped up for us offensively scoring in double figures. Delanie Fayerweather had some nice transition buckets for us while she was running the floor and Kendall Schutz did a nice job of taking control on offense and calming our team down when needed. I am very proud of our girls and their effort both offensively and defensively. It is always a good night when you can compete with teams above you in the conference standings.”
Bella Rassbach led the Toppers with 18 points followed by Ryeah Oehlke with 14 and Maddie Oehlke with 12.
