GLENWOOD CITY — Two more games for the fledgling Hilltopper boys’ basketball team resulted in two more losses added to their winless record.
Glenwood City, now 0-18 overall and 0-11 in the Dunn-St. Croix, hosted the Cardinals of Luck on Monday, February 10th, where they lost 27-72. Returning to conference play three days later, the Mounders of Elk Mound came to town and toppled the Toppers 62-41 on Thursday the 13th.
The Hilltoppers played Tuesday, February 18th in Plum City and will be in Spring Valley on Thursday the 20th to take on the Cardinals.
Luck
The boys really struggled against the Cardinals on Monday, February 10 due in part to illness.
Seems as though the “crud” that has been going around school finally caught up with the basketball team and took out two of their starters.
Glenwood City head coach Tristan Kittilson commented that, “We looked flat from start to finish. I do believe a big part of that was due to sickness.”
It wasn’t much of a game as the Luck Cardinals took a 42-15 lead after the first half.
In the second half, the Toppers were again outscored, 12-30.
The Cardinals are presently in third place in the Lakeland West conference with a 7-3 record and are 11-5 overall.
Despite the loss, Kittilson found some good that night stating that Drew Olson had a nice overall game and did a lot of nice things. He was the Toppers’ leading scorer with ten points. Brandyn Hallquist was next with nine.

Elk Mound
Last Thursday the Hilltoppers still weren’t completely healthy but by far they played a better game when they took on the Elk Mound Mounders in a conference contest. The Mounders are currently sitting in second place, along with Colfax and Spring Valley, in the Dunn-St. Croix conference with an 8-3 record.
According to Coach Kittilson, the Toppers started out very strong, shooting the ball well, mainly from outside the arc.

Brandyn Hallquist had three, three pointers in the opening minutes of the game and Drew Olson got fouled shooting a three and then converted all of his free throws which helped give the Toppers an early lead.
However, the Toppers started to cool off and the Mounders heated up and the score was 21-22 with about five minutes left to play in the first half. Unfortunately, the Hilltoppers really struggled in those final five minutes and the Mounders kept scoring. By the end of the first half, the Mounders had taken a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Toppers didn’t play or shoot nearly as well as they did at the start of the first half while the Mounders continued to build on their lead.
Elk Mound went on to outscore Glenwood City 31-18 in the second half.
Kittilson admitted that the Toppers 29 turnovers were just too much to overcome.
Hallquist led the team with 15 points while hauling in nine rebounds. Sophomore Owen Swenby added nine points. Gavin Janson, who took ill in the game against Luck, was back but still not 100 percent. Kittilson commended Janson’s play remarking that he showed a lot of grit trying to play for his teammates.
