It was not a pretty sight this past week as the Lady Hilltoppers basketball team lost three games.
Their first loss came at the hands of the Division 5 state-ranked Warriors of Clear Lake on Monday, February 3rd in Clear Lake. Their second defeat, a 40-point drubbing, was handed to them by the Elk Mound Mounders in a game held in Elk Mound on Thursday, February 6th. The final loss came on Saturday, February 8th as they took on the Mondovi Buffaloes on the road in a game that was originally scheduled on January 17th and postponed due to the weather.
The Hilltopper girls haven’t won again since December 10th and with only four regular season games left on the schedule they will have few opportunities to secure some more victories.
Let’s hope that they continue their upswing of good play and have some success as the season winds down. The Toppers hosted the Wolves from Elmwood/Plum City on Tuesday, February 11th and will travel to Spring Valley this Friday, February 14th. Glenwood City returns home next Tuesday, February 18 to play Cadott.
Clear Lake
The Warriors who have yet to be defeated this season boast a 17-0 overall record and sit atop the Lakeland Central conference with an 8-0 record and are ranked number 2 in the Division 5 coaches’ state poll.
As for the game, Toppers’ head coach Dean Fayerweather admitted his girls did not play together as a team. That coupled with 29 turnovers didn’t do the Toppers any good against this powerhouse.
Fayerweather continued by saying, “They have a very good team and were very dominant on the court and strong on the boards, they out rebounded us and used their bodies well.”
The Warriors outscored the Toppers 36-12 in the first half and 30-16 in the second to win the game 66-28.
Delanie Fayerweather was the only Hilltopper in double digits with ten points. The Warriors had three players in double digits. Madison Zimmer and Jassmyn Warner each had 20 points while Maddie Rosen added 18.

After the first half, Elk Mound up by twenty, leading 31-11.
The second half continued in much the same way and with about five minutes left in the game, they went to a running clock. The Toppers struggled while the Mounders were on their game making steals and out rebounding the Lady Tops.

After this latest loss, the Hilltoppers are 1-10 in conference play and 3-14 overall.
The girls only lost to the Buffaloes by fifteen points, a great improvement over their last two games.
According to Coach Fayerweather, Glenwood City played a good game with the girls hustling. Unfortunately, they got behind late in the first half, trailing 28-17 at half, and couldn’t dig themselves out the hole.
The Lady Toppers were outscored by just four points – 22-18 – in the second half.
