GLENWOOD CITY — On Tuesday, February 3rd, the Hilltopper boys’ basketball team took on the Colfax Vikings at home.
In the end, the Vikings proved to be too much for the Toppers as they lost 45-65 to remain winless this season.
At the start of the game, the teams seemed pretty evenly matched with both missing some shots and the Toppers turning the ball over a few times.
With two, three pointers from Brandyn Hallquist and another from Gavin Janson the Toppers took an early 9-7 lead at the 11:47 mark. However, the tides turned as the Toppers continued to miss shots while the Vikings seemed to find their groove. The Vikings put up 11 unanswered points, giving them an 18-9 lead.
Over the next two minutes, the Toppers added two more points to the Vikings three. Then both teams went cold for nearly three minutes before Bryce Wickman got things going again for Glenwood City with a bucket from outside the arc. Unfortunately, this was followed up with five points from the Vikings. The Vikes now held a 26-14 lead.
With three and a half minutes left to play in the first half, Hallquist drove in the paint for two points which the Vikings answered with a run of eight.
Then with about thirty seconds on the clock, Ethan Hanson hit for three outside the arc. The Vikings then kept control of the ball, setting up for one finally shot which was successful with two seconds on the clock. The Vikings took a 36-19 lead into the locker room.
The Hilltoppers started the second half pressing the Vikings. However, the Vikings didn’t have much trouble breaking the press.
It was a pretty tight second half with the teams often trading points. At one point in the middle of the half, the Vikings went on a seven-point run but the Toppers countered that with an eight-point run of their own.

As close as the Toppers were keeping it, they just couldn’t make any headway from their first-half deficit. In the end, the Vikings outscored the Toppers 29-26 in the half and 65-45 for the game.
After the game, Glenwood City head coach Tristan Kittilson had this to say about the game. “We came out and battled hard early knocking down some three point baskets. Unfortunately, so did they and we failed to keep them off the offensive glass and gave them too many second chance points. And then struggled to find any scoring for the remainder of the half. In the second half we were about to put up more points but were not able to make enough plays down the stretch. Hats off to Colfax they played well and made a lot of good plays.”
The Toppers were led by Brandyn Hallquist with 14 points followed by Ethan Hanson with 11 which included three, three pointers. As a team, the Toppers sank ten three-pointers but weren’t able to get much else going.
The Hilltoppers hosted Luck on Monday, February 10th in a non-conference game. They will also host Elk Mound this Thursday, the 13th. Glenwood City will travel to Plum City next Tuesday, February 18 to play the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves.
