MENOMONIE — Continuing with their season-long theme of wrestling tough competition, the Hilltopper grapplers took part in the Whitetail Shootout at Menomonie High School last Friday evening.
The 8-team, dual-style tournament held January 31 in the Mustangs’ spacious high school gymnasium featured several larger schools including: Tomah, Wausau West, Eau Claire North and host Menomonie along with Division 2 honorable mention Baldwin-Woodville and Dunn-St. Croix leader Spring Valley/Elmwood.
Glenwood City dropped its first two duals of the shootout, losing to Menomonie 48-21 and Eau Claire North 36-36 on tie-breaking criteria (North won seven matches to the Toppers’ six) before knocking off Mondovi for the second time this season, 42-34, to finish in seventh place.
Not too bad considering the Toppers, who have been forfeiting at least three weight classes for much of the season, were even more shorthanded last week than usual, with Gabe Knops and Jabin Hojem out of the line-up due to illness.
“Despite being short handed with a couple kids out, we competed well,” said Glenwood City head coach Shane Strong of his team’s Whitetail Shootout performance.
“In our first dual (against Menomonie), we lost three close matches that could have made a big swing in our dual score,” noted Strong.
In its next dual, against another Big Rivers school – Eau Claire North, the Hilltoppers won six of the nine contested matches with pins by Tucker Lagerstrom (170), Trenton McNamara (220), Ian Radintz (106), Andy Grant (120) and James Knight (126) but surrendered four forfeits to North which gave the Huskies seven match wins to the Toppers six for the victory on tie-breaking criteria.

The Toppers won the battle of forfeits in its final tournament dual against the Buffaloes of Mondovi. Glenwood City received seven forfeits to Mondovi’s four to win 42-34. The Buffs won both of the dual’s contested matches at 138 and 195 pounds via falls.
Tomah claimed first place in the Shootout with Baldwin-Woodville coming in second followed by Wausau West in third, host Menomonie in fourth, Spring Valley/Elmwood fifth, Eau Claire North sixth, the Toppers seventh and Mondovi in eighth place.
Individually, four Toppers finished 3-0 with another taking two of his three matches.
Senior Tucker Lagerstorm (170), junior Andy Grant (120), along with freshmen Ian Radintz (106) and Trenton McNamara (220) all went unbeaten in Menomonie. Lagerstom and Radintz had a pair of pin falls. Another freshman, James Knight, finished 2-1 at 126 pounds.
Glenwood City, now 7-9 in duals this year, will close out its regular and conference seasons this Thursday evening, February 6 when it hosts neighbor rival Boyceville.
The Toppers’ tournament season begins Saturday, February 15 with Division 3 Regional competition at Durand.
