MONDOVI — The Buffaloes may have won the battle but the Hilltoppers won the war when the two teams met on the wrestling mat at Mondovi High School last Thursday evening.
While Mondovi claimed victories in four of the five contested matches including three via pin falls, Glenwood City was awarded five forfeits and got a pin from senior Tucker Lagerstrom to come out on top of the January 16 Dunn-St. Croix dual by a mere three points – 36 to 33.
There were also double forfeits at 113 and 182 pounds.
The win improved the Toppers conference standing to a perfect 2-0 with matches at Spring Valley this Thursday evening and at home against rival Boyceville on February 6 remaining on the D-SC slate.
With last Thursday’s dual beginning at 132 pounds, Mondovi bounded to a quick 24 to 6 advantage as Ashton Fedie and Cody Wagner opened with pins over GC’s Gabe Knops and Thomas Moede which were coupled with a pair of forfeits (152 and 160) to the Buffaloes.
A forfeit to Noah Brite at 145 pounds was the Hilltoppers only points during the five-match span.
Tucker Lagerstrom then registered Glenwood City’s only win among the five contested matches, a pinned over Mondovi’s Mitchell Fedie at 170 pounds.
Marcis DeSmith was awarded a forfeit win at 195 which cut the GC deficit to just six points – 24-18.
But Raith Bauer’s pin of Topper Trenton McNamara at 220 pounds and Nathan Pelke’s tight 3-1 decision over GC senior Andrews Berends at heavyweight (285) pushed the Buffaloes’ lead to 33-18.
The final three match, however, went in favor of Glenwood City as Ian Radintz (106), Andy Grant (120) and James Knight (126) were all awarded forfeits giving the Hilltoppers the three points victory.
Besides this Thursday’s D-SC dual in Spring Valley, Glenwood City competed Tuesday (January 21) in a multiple-school dual meet tournament at St. Croix Central, which was a recent addition to the schedule after last Saturday’s tournament in Chippewa Falls was canceled due to the snow storm, and will wrap up the week competing in the St. Croix Falls Invitational this Saturday, January 25.
