MENOMONIE — The Glenwood City boys’ basketball team took on the Unity Eagles in the Northwest Tipoff Classic held at UW-Stout last Saturday, December 7.
It was a grim first outing for the Toppers as they lost 21-63.
Hilltoppers’ head coach Tristan Kittilson conceded that it was a tough, season-opening game for his boys.
“We really struggled to get the ball in the basket and Unity took advantage down low scoring with their size and length,” stated Kittilson.
The Eagles outscored the Toppers 34 to 8 in the first half.
In the second half, things weren’t much better for Glenwood City as Unity put up 29 points to the Hilltoppers’ 13.
Despite the lopsided score, Coach Kittilson was proud of the way his team played.
“[They] kept fighting and playing hard,” Kittilson noted.
In particular, Kittilson was happy with play of Jordan Klatt coming off the bench. Kittilson remarked that Klatt was a little frustrated picking up two quick fouls but he didn’t let that get him down and he came out in the second half and had a couple of nice baskets. Kittilson also noted that Klatt showed great hustle.
Another player of note for Kittilson was Ethan Hanson. He said that Hanson did a nice job of sharing the basketball and trying to get his teammates good looks throughout the game.
Klatt, Hanson and Brandyn Hallquist led the Toppers with four points each.
Kittilson feels as though they learned a lot from this first game and were able to identify the things that they need to work on to be more competitive.
The Hilltoppers (0-1) will have a lot of game day experience this week with three games on the schedule. Glenwood City played this past Monday night, December 9 in Cadott. Then this Thursday, December 12, the Hilltoppers host Durand in their first conference game. They follow that up with a road game in Prescott on Friday, December 13. This game was rescheduled from December 2.
