COLFAX — The Glenwood City football team suffered its second shut out loss in three games last Friday evening in Colfax. The Vikings blanked the Hilltoppers 34-0 in cold and windy conditions that brought with it snow flurries.
Glenwood City had trouble containing Colfax seniors Trey Hovde and Mitch Harmon in the game. Hovde scored the Vikings’ first three touchdowns including a 70-yard return of the game’s opening kickoff while Harmon rushed for 139 yards and another six-point score.
When the snow had settled on the game, Colfax had outgained the Hilltoppers 349 to 259.
While the Vikings improved to 2-3 in D-SC play and 2-6 overall, the Toppers fell to 0-5 in conference and 1-7 in all games this season.
It took Trey Hovde just 14 seconds to put Colfax on the scoreboard as he returned Glenwood City’s opening kickoff 70 yards for the first six points in the October 11 contest. A successful two-point conversion run by Mitch Harmon had the Vikes in front 8-0.
Glenwood City began their first drive deep in Viking territory and would battle their way to Colfax’s two-yard line before turning it over on downs.
This would be the precursor to the Toppers evening as Colfax would continue their dominance throughout the four quarters.
Hovde added a 7-yard run at 2:06 of the first quarter and Harmon again added the two-point conversion for a 16-0 Vikings’ lead.
Colfax and Hovde would tack on another six points just a few minutes into the second quarter as he ran into the end zone from 20 yards away. The conversion try failed leaving Colfax with a 22-0 advantage which it took into the halftime break.
Glenwood City’s freshman quarterback Bryce Wickman struggled to get a passing game going as he fumbled the ball twice, both of which were recovered by Colfax’s Cole Kiekhafer. Wickman went two-of-four for a total of 26 yards, and came up short in his two attempts to run the ball downfield.
During halftime, Glenwood City opted to escape the elements when they headed back on to the bus in attempts to warm up.
With seven minutes left before the start of the second half, the Hilltoppers made their way back on to the field to warm up and readjust to the cold.
But the second half began just like the first had with a Viking score. Mitch Harmon capped a Colfax drive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone which brought the Vikings’ lead to 28-0 with 3:39 left in the third quarter.
Colfax added the game’s final touchdown at the 10:12 mark of the final period on Noah Albricht’s 18-yard pass to Zach Rindy for the score and a 34-0 final.
The Hilltoppers had just one penalty called against them for grabbing a face mask during Colfax’s drive to the end zone. The penalty was for 15-yards and was assessed on the kick-off.
Max Jenson was the leading rusher for Glenwood City, finishing the evening with 46 yards, followed by Ethan Hanson with 32 yards.
Leading the receivers was Brandyn Hallquist with 20 yards, followed by Max Janson with 6 yards.
Glenwood City will wrap up their 2019 campaign at home against Elk Mound (3-2, 5-3) this Friday evening, October 18.
In the October 9 story about Glenwood City’s homecoming victory over Fall Creek, Ethan Hanson was given credit for the interception that led to the Hilltoppers’ game-clinching touchdown. The interception was, in fact, made by fellow senior Dan Loring. The Tribune Press Reporter apologizes for the error.
