BARRON — With near perfect running conditions, mild and cloud covered, the Hilltopper runners ran away with first place in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions at the Barron Cross Country Invitational held last Thursday, September 26th.
“It was a great meet,” enthused Glenwood City head coach Matthew Schutz. “It was great to see the boys celebrating a team victory right alongside the girls. The girls were very excited for the guys.”
Leading the way for the girls, as usual, was sophomore Bella Simmons who ran to a second-place finish with a time of 20:26.6. Right behind her were teammates Izzy Williams and Kendall Schutz who crossed the line in third and fourth respectively. Kinzie Strong came in 11th while Emily Bethell finished in the 14th spot. Gabby Moede was not too far behind in 19th while Sam Peterson rounded out the top seven finishing in the 40th spot.
Out of 92 runners, Fran Peterson of Barron captured the girls’ individual title with a time of 20:16.9.
With freshman JJ Williams back, the Topper boys earned their first, first-place finish of the season. He ran to a third-place finish with a time of 17:49.9. Another freshman, Elek Anderson was next in for the Toppers taking ninth place with Brady McCarthy on his heels in tenth. Elijah Simmons was 22nd with Jabin Hojem just 16 seconds behind in the 30th spot. Brendan Booth and Owen Bauman rounded out the top seven.
Matthew Marcinske of Birchwood led the field of 98 runners to take the boys’ individual title with a time of 16:32.7.
The Hilltoppers’ next race will be in Spring Valley this Thursday, October 3rd. This looks to be a preview of what the conference meet may look like when it’s held in Spring Valley on the 17th. Glenwood City will also compete in Amery next Tuesday, October 8.
