DURAND — It was a breezy day for the Elk Mound and Colfax cross country teams as they headed to Durand on Thursday, September 26.
Elk Mound’s boys’ team once again took the number one spot with a total of 69 points, besting runner-up Ellsworth by 24 points. The Lady Mounders meanwhile placed seventh in a field of ten schools that had complete squads with 214 points.
Colfax’s harrier men continued to run at full strength to score points as a team, and finished in 14th place with a combined score of 326. Colfax’s ladies finished in eighth place with 224 points.
Individually among area runners, Elk Mound’s Lukas and Seth Hazen had top ten finishes for the boys while Colfax’s Ansley Olson took 14th in the girls’ race.
Elk Mound also competed in Mondovi earlier in the week (see story in this issue). The Mounders and Vikings will both run in Spring Valley this Thursday. Elk Mound will also run in Amery next Tuesday, October 8.

The Mounder men were once again the top dogs at Durand with a first-place finish. But did not see their top two runners, Cade Hanson and Andrew Pathos, finish near the front of the pack.
“With a meet scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday this week we broke our boy’s team up, so half raced each meet and the other half worked on something they needed to improve on during the race,” said Mounders’ head coach Jeremiah Fredrickson. “It could not have worked out better for them.”

Lukas Wagner and Seth Hazen stayed true to their pattern over the last few weeks as the finished in fourth and seventh place with times of 17:45.2 and 18:09.8.
Finding himself in the middle of the runners for Elk Mound was Andrew Pathos, who finished in third place in Mondovi, took a seventeenth-place finish in Durand with a time of 18:33.8.
Ian Hazen and Trae Schaefer rounded out the runners who scored for Elk Mound with a 18th and 23rd place finish with times of 18:34.1 and 18:50.4. Cade Hanson, who is known for finishing in the top five for the Mounders, found himself in an uncharacteristic place of 26th and a time of 18:56.6.
“On the girls’ side, we are starting to get healthy and the underclassmen are learning to race,” Fredrickson said. “After holding most our team out at Mondovi, it was nice to see most of the girls race and get season bests at Durand.”
Olivia Schreiber and Kyra Hadenfeldt competed in Mondovi earlier in the week and kept the momentum going as they finished with times of 23:27.2 and 24:28.2 for 27th and 40th place for Elk Mound.
Finishing next for the Mounders was Rosie Kaminski in 41st place with a time of 24:33.0 and Kristin Martinson crossed just five-tenths of a second later in 42nd place and a time of 24:33.5.
Amber Best rounded out the scoring runners for Elk Mound as she finished in 64th place with a time of 25:34.3

The Colfax men have finally started to find their rhythm as they competed in Durand as a full team once again with Noah Heidorn and Dennis Sonnentag crossing first for the Vikings in 35th and 42nd place with times of 19:22.6 and 19:32.8.
“Noah and Dennis were solid again and someone we really like and has a ton of potential is freshmen Ashton Yarrington,” said Vikings head coach Joe Doucette.
Yarrington finished in 66th place for Colfax with a time of 20:40.5, followed by Luke Blanchard in 87th place and a time of 21:37.2 and Brison Tuschl in 120th place with a time of 22:32.8.
“The girls used a pack run designed to help our 4-8 runners improve and I think that helped,” said Doucette. “We let Ansley Olson go and she was solid as the rest of the team stayed together.”
Olson crossed the line first for the Viking ladies taking 14th place in a time of 22:45.5.
Keeping with the pack racing, Colfax saw their next four runners finish within seconds of each other.
Molly Heidorn and Emilee Burcham-Scofield finished in 50th and 51st place with times that were separated by two-tenths of a second at 25:05.1 and 25:05.3.
Separated by six seconds was Juelia Berger and Jillian Bowe in 53rd and 56th place with times of 25:08.5 and 25:14.2.
Jenna Goodell was the last of the Colfax runners to cross the finish line in 72nd place with a time of 26:06.2.
“The scary part from early in the season is how good the Dunn-St. Croix is, it has always been good in cross country but this year it’s loaded with good teams and runners,” Doucette explained. “We will really have to improve to beat many of the teams.”
