Mounders’ volleyball takes win in conference opener; face tough opponents in Eau Claire

Despite a conference opening win over Spring Valley, the Mounders’ volleyball squad had a tough week as it suffered losses in three of its four matches at the Eau Claire North Invitational this past Saturday. over the weekend against Bloomer, Eau Claire Memorial and Thorp.
Elk Mound opened Dunn-St. Croix conference play last Thursday evening, September 19, with an away game against the Spring Valley Cardinals and emerged with a 3-0 win.
On Saturday, September 21, the Mounders headed to Eau Claire North for their last invitational of the season and were only able to salvage one win in four games. Elk Mound’s lone win was against Osceola two sets to one. The Mounders were swept in two sets by Eau Claire Memorial and Bloomer and fell in three sets (2-1) to Thorp.
Elk Mound played in Elmwood last evening (September 24) against the Wolves of Elmwood/Plum City. The Mounders will have a week off before hosting the Glenwood City Hilltoppers next Tuesday, October 1.
Spring Valley
It was a strong conference opener for the Mounders as they traveled to Spring Valley on Thursday evening and took the win in three by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-14.
“The girls brought excitement and energy and it showed in how they played,” said head coach Samantha Stelter. “We passed well, set well, and attacked aggressively.”
Maggie Bartig and Lexi Nechanicky led the Mounders on attacks with ten kills apiece respectively, Bartig also had two digs while Nechanicky had three.
Leading the way from the service line was Issie Hollister as she had five aces for Elk Mound, followed by Morgan Kinblom with three.
“Offensively, we had an outstanding performance,” said Stelter. “As a team we had 43 kills, hit a .341 with a 52 percent kill average.”
Senior Kortnee Halgren was once again the leading force as far as assists were concerned as she put up 37.
“There’s always room to play better, but I was very pleased with our performance,” Stelter explained.
Eau Claire North Invite
It was a four-game invitational for Elk Mound on Saturday morning, September 21, with games against Eau Claire Memorial, Osceola, Bloomer and Thorp.
Elk Mound faced off against the Old Abes of EC Memorial first round and suffered the loss in two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-21.
Maggie Bartig led the way with seven kills against Memorial followed by Sophie Cedarblade and Susan Marquardt who each had six.
Working her way around the floor was Hailey Blaskowski as she put down 11 digs, during the first match.
The Mounders lone win of the day was against Osceola in three sets with scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 15-11.
During the two-set match against Bloomer, which Elk Mound lost 25-18 and 25-21, Issie Hollister played strong with two aces and seven digs. Both of which led in digs and serves.
Morgan Kinblom was the leader close to the net as she put up ten assists for Elk Mound, followed by McKenna Diermeier and Maggie Bartig each with one.
Elk Mound wrapped up the day with a loss to the Thorp Cardinals in which the Mounders lost in three by scores of 22-25, 25-13, and 14-16.
Maggie Bartig and Sophie Cedarblade helped as they put up seven and six kills respectively.
Taking charge was McKenna Diermeier in digs as she put up twenty-four against the Cardinals in the three-set match.
Also, Morgan Kinblom had another successful game as she had twenty-one assists for Elk Mound against Thorp.
