Mounders rushing game works in their favor in win over Boyceville

ELK MOUND — After a rough game against the state-ranked Mondovi Buffaloes the previous Friday, the Elk Mound Mounders bounced back to take a big win over the Boyceville Bulldogs this past Friday, September 13, by a score of 49-12.
“It was nice night to get back on track and run the ball,” said Elk Mound head coach Dave Lew. “The kids worked hard all week to forget the Mondovi game, and they know it is a long season and they need to continue to get better and play hard.”
The Mounders snapped their two-game losing skid with the victory and are now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Dunn-St. Croix action.
Senior back Blaze Todd had the Mounders’ running game in high gear throughout the contest. Todd ran for 273 yards and five touchdowns on 23 attempts to carry Elk Mound to the lopsided win.
In all, the Mounders tallied all its yardage on the ground, finishing with 340 yards on 29 attmepts.
It took Elk Mound less than two minutes to put its first points on the scoreboard as Blaze Todd made his way to the end zone on a 54-yard run at 10:14 of the first quarter. The extra point by Gaelen Young, who made all seven of his PAT’s on the evening, was good giving the Mounders a 7-0 lead.
The Bulldogs made it a one-point game after their quarterback Connor Sempf scored on a two-yard ramble into the end zone at the 5:07 mark. Boyceville went for the lead on a two-point conversion but were unsuccessful leaving the score at 7-6.
For the second time in the first quarter, Blaze Todd made his way into the end zone for a touchdown off a nine-yard rush with 1:36 remaining in the quarter. Another successful extra point by Young pushed the Mounders lead to 14-6.
Elk Mound would put 14 more points on the board in the second quarter off of two more rushing touchdowns by Blaze Todd. A 13-yard Todd run and Gaelen Young extra point upped the Mounders’ advantage to 21-6.

Then with just 57 ticks left in the first half, Todd made his way into the end zone for a fourth time on a six-yard run. Young tacked on the PAT and Elk Mound led 28-6 at the half.
Todd added his fifth and final rushing score with 8:24 left in the third quarter as he scored from 11 yards out. Young again split the uprights to make it 35-6 in the Mounders’ favor.
Avery Kaanta, who tallied 58 yards on five carries, scored on a 7-yard run with 1:57 left in the third to make it 42-6 with Young’s extra point kick.
Connor Sempf scored his second touchdown for the Bulldogs on a 36-yard run with 7:14 left in the game to make it 42-12 after a failed conversion run.
Kaanta closed out the game, scoring a big play for the Mounders as he put an exclamation point on Elk Mound’s huge victory with an 85-yard kick-off return just 15 seconds after the Bulldogs had scored to usher in a running game clock.
Chase Rhude handled the duties of quarterback for the Mounders, but finished with one completion in his nine throwing attempts for no yards.
Junior Nate Lew has been a strong defensive player for Elk Mound as he put up five solo tackles, and seven total tackles against the Bulldogs
“I was very happy with our offensive and defensive line,” Lew stated. “It was nice to see them play like they did. We are in for a great game next week in Durand, exciting and fun.”
The Mounders travel to Durand this Friday, September 20, to take on the Panthers, who were 35-8 winners over Glenwood City last week.
