Mounder volleyball walks away with a win over Stanley-Boyd; finish 4-3 in Menomonie sprawl

The Mounder ladies opened the 2019 regular volleyball season on Tuesday, August 27, with a three-set road sweep over the Orioles of Stanley-Boyd after struggling three days earlier in their first scrimmage.
After a slow start against Stanley-Boyd, the Mounders Maggie Bartig could got herself into position for 11 kills, and McKenna Diermeier led the offense with three aces against Stanley-Boyd.
On Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31, Elk Mound traveled to Menomonie to take part in the Menomonie Sprawl hosted at UW-Stout.
Elk Mound went 4-3 during the sprawl with wins over Oshkosh’s Lourdes Academy, Turtle Lake, Cadott and Medford.
McKenna Diermeier was versatile for the Mounders as she managed 79 digs over the weekend followed by 19 kills and seven aces.
Elk Mound participated in a quadrangular last evening, Tuesday, September 3 against Cumberland, Regis, and St. Croix Central, and will travel to Aquinas for an invitational this Saturday, September 7.
Stanley-Boyd Match
The Lady Mounders traveled to Stanley-Boyd on Tuesday, August 27, and walked away with a 3-0 win over the Orioles.
“I am very pleased with our 3-0 victory over Stanley-Boyd,” said Mounders head coach Samantha Stelter. “We struggled at our scrimmage on Saturday so it was great to see the girls rebound and come back strong in competition last night.”
The Mounders started out slow while they worked out some of their first game jitters.
Maggie Bartig led the way for Elk Mound as she had 11 kills on the defensive side with Sophie Cedarblade right behind her with nine kills.
“The girls really played well as a team, the atmosphere and energy was great,” Stelter added.
The offense held their own including against a big block from the Orioles, according to Stelter.
McKenna Diermeier and Kortnee Halgren performed well on the offense. Diermeier had three aces and 13 digs and Halgren had two aces and 19 assists.
“It’s an exciting place to start the season as we look to build heading into the Sprawl this weekend,” explained Stelter.
Menomonie Sprawl
Elk Mound went 4-3 on the Friday and Saturday, August 30 and 31, with a 3-1 record on Friday to earn them second in their pool, and they were 1-2 on Saturday.
Friday saw the girls earning wins over Lourdes Academy, Turtle Lake, and Cadott with their only loss to Eau Claire North. Saturday the Lady Mounders lost to River Valley and Steven’s Point with their only win being over Medford.
In their only loss on Friday against EC North, McKenna Diermeier put up three aces and ten digs against the Huskies. Kortnee Halgren, Lexi Nechanicky and Sophie Cedarblade also made some moves on the court with Halgren’s seven assists and Nechanicky and Cedarblade’s three kills.
Diermeier also made her presence known against Lordes and Cadott with a total of 15 digs and six aces.
Morgan Kinblom put up two aces, six assists and seven digs against Lordes, and Kortnee Halgren had 15 assists and six digs over Cadott.
Saturday was a tougher day for Elk Mound as they went 1-2.
Kortnee Halgren had four aces and 11 assists in the Mounders loss to River Valley, and McKenna Diermeier also had 14 digs.
In the only win of the day against Medford, Diermeier had 11 kills and 12 digs, while Hailey Blaskowski and Morgan Kinblom had 24 digs between the pair.
Kortnee Halgren led Elk Mound with 23 assists against Steven’s point, and Sophie Cedarblade had seven kills.
