WISCONSIN DELLS — Recent Elk Mound graduate Abby Curry competed in her Mounders’ uniform for the last time at the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association (WFSCA) All-Star Game in Wisconsin Dells on June 17 and 18.
State All-Star players met and practiced with their respective teams on Monday, June 17 and then played a series of games on Tuesday, June 18 at the Woodside Sports complex.
“She did a great job at the plate, getting on base multiple times,” said Mounders’ head coach McKayla Brunner. “She was great to watch and have represent our team!”
Curry had the chance to play at third base and right field during the two game stint in the Dells, of which she spent time in both positions during the regular season.
The first game that Curry played was at 9:00 a.m. against the Gray team, followed by a 12:00 p.m. game against the Blue Team.
Curry along with Hannah Prissel of Durand were the only players to represent the Dunn-St. Croix conference on the Division 2/3 Black Team. Maggie Wallin of Glenwood City, Maci Luff and Erin Seifert of Pepin/Alma and Kali Brathol of Elmwood/Plum City were members of the Division 4/5 Green Team.
The All-Star game is broken up into three divisions, each with six teams, which include Division 1, Division 2/3 and Division 4/5.
The divisions are broken up and determined by where the schools were placed during the WIAA 2019 softball tournament.
Throughout the 2019 season, Curry improved her offensive game by leaps and bounds as she earned a slugging percentage of .860 and 13 RBIs.
“Abby really came around offensively mid-season and the end,” Brunner stated. “Defensively, she made the transition into the infield playing third base. She had played left (field) in previous seasons.”
Curry batted in the fifth position for Elk Mound all season and was able to work her way out of a slump she had at the beginning of the year.
She ended the 2019 season on a high note as she had a .415 on base percentage for the Mounders, earning 20 total bases off 45 plate appearances.
Curry had eight singles, three doubles and two triples against the opposing pitchers in the 16 games she played for Elk Mound in her senior year.
