HAYWARD — The Elk Mound golf duo of Ethan Rubenzer and Max Marquardt capped the Mounders’ 2019 season by competing in the WIAA Division 2 boys’ golf sectional.
While the pair were unable to advance to this week’s state championships, which were held this past Monday and Tuesday at Unversity Ridge in Madison, they did demonstrate why the Elk Mound golf program is on the upswing when they qualified for the sectional meet which was held last Wednesday, May 29 at Hayward Golf Course.
Ethan Rubenzer shot a 88 on the 18-hole, par-72 course. The junior was consistent with his play as his carded identical scores of 44 on the front and back nine to finish in a five-way tie for 37th place.
In his final high school golf match, senior Max Marquardt finished with a score of 104. After hitting for a 51 in his first nine holes, Marquardt took a 53 on the final nine holes and finished 72nd.
Lakeland Union captured the sectional championship with a score of 303 just one stroke less than runner-up Rice Lake at 304. Both qualified for the state meet as the top two team finishers in the 12-team field.
Earning state berths as the top three individuals from non-qualifying teams were Northerwesteran’s Kordell Swanson (5th) and Trevor Priem (10th) with scores of 75 and 79 respectively and Matt Mueller (6th) of St. Croix Central with a 77.
