CUMBERLAND — Glenwood City’s 2019 golf season came to a conclusion last Tuesday in Cumberland.
The Hilltoppers’ finished eighth among the 12 teams that competed in the WIAA Division 3 Cumberland Boys’ Golf Sectional held at Cumberland Golf Course May 28.
Glenwood City finished the 18-hole tournament with a final stroke count of 394 just missing seventh place, which was taken by Unity, by a single stroke.
Senior Dillon Hierlmeier had the top finish for Glenwood City, shooting a 92 to finish 20th in the 72-player field. He shot identical scores of 46 on the front and back nine holes.
The Toppers’ number two golfer, Ethan Hanson, was just a stroke behind Hierlmeier taking a score of 93 on the par-72 course. Hanson, who finished 22nd on the leader board, shot a team best 43 on the front nine but fell off that pace in the back nine and took a 50.
Will Owen, Glenwood City’s top golfer for much of the season, struggled Tuesday in Cumberland. The junior shot a 54 on the first nine holes but was able to shave some strokes on the final nine to score a 49 and finish the day with an overall count of 103.
Junior Alexa Holden has become a frequent member of GC’s varsity five over the course of the season and she showed why with her sectional play. Holden shot a 50 on the opening nine holes and took a 56 on back nine for a 106.
Senior Gavin Samp rounded out the Toppers’ scoring with a 109 as he carded a 54 on holes one through nine and then took a 55 on ten through 18.
Luck/Frederic shot a low score of 338 to take the team sectional championship by one stroke over Dunn-St. Croix runner-up Spring Valley who finished in second with a 339.
Those two teams earned berths in the WIAA State Golf Championships which were held Monday and Tuesday, June 3 and 4 at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison.
The three individual state berths, reserved for the top three from teams that did not make the state cut, ironically, went to this year’s top three finishers. Isaac Larrabee of Eleva-Strum and Brice Klabunde of Cameron both finished with three-over-par 75s to top the leader board. Larrabee defeated Klabunde on the third playoff hole to take first. There was also a tie for the third place where Jared Lee of Grantsburg defeated Logan Lillehaug of Luck/Frederic on the first playoff hole after the two had finished with 77s. Lee earned the final individual state birth while Lillehaug played with his team earlier this week in Madison.
Team Scores: 1. Luck/Frederic 338, 2. Spring Valley 339, 3. Grantsburg 342, 4. Durand 345, 5. Eleva-Strum 363, 6. Cadott 387, 7. Unity 393, 8. Glenwood City 394, 9. Chequamegon 404, 10. Prentice 421, 11. Ladysmith 453, 12. Flambeau 461.
