BLOOMER — A burst of confidence helped the Elk Mound boys’ track and field team in the WIAA Division 2 regional held Monday, May 20, in Bloomer.
“The boys 4×400 relay team came together with the right amount of confidence to break the school record,” head coach Jonathon Langreck said. “I knew going into the regional they had a chance to beat the record of 3:33.9.”
The 4×400 relay team beat the old school record by more than two seconds to win the competition in Bloomer, finishing more than seven seconds ahead of the runner-up squad from St. Croix Central. Elk Mound’s title-winning team consisted of Rian Flynn, Cade Hanson, Brady Redwine and Seth Hazen and they finished with a time of 3:31.56.
The Mounder boys finished fourth in the team standings behind champion St. Croix Central (128), runner-up Somerset (123.5), both of the Middle Border, and host Bloomer (115). Elk Mound finished with 100 points in the 8-team meet.
The Elk Mound girls scored just 32 points and finished in eighth place. St. Croix Central also won the girls’ meet with 142 while Bloomer placed second with 134.
The top four place winners in each event advanced to last Thursday’s D2 sectional meet in Mosinee.
For the Elk Mound boys, Seth Hazen also qualified for the 400 meter dash event at the Mosinee sectional on May 23, as he finished in second place with a time of :52.53.
Taking seconds and sectional berths were Brady Redwine in the 200 meters dash with a :23.81 and Rian Flynn in the 100 meters with a time of :11.56. Redwine also placed fourth in the long jump with a best of 18’ 9.5”.
The boys’ 4×100 m relay team of Redwine, Flynn, Dominic Hall and Spencer Wolf also took second in a time of :45.33. The 4x200m relay team of Hall, Wolf, Logan Schultz and Luke Hanson came in third with a 1:37.97. Both teams also advanced to Mosinee.
Finishing in fifth place in the 1,600 meter run for the girls was Kristin Martinson with a time of 5:58.53, and Alana Plaszcz finished in fifth place in the 3,200 meter run with a time of 13:34.53. Both Plaszcz and Martinson were part of the girls 4×800 meter relay team that finished in fourth place to qualify for sectionals and were joined by Victoria Fasbender and Olivia Schreiber.
“I thought individually we had some great times with some others advancing,” Langreck explained.
Gaelen Young finished in second place in the pole vault event after clearing a height of 11’ 00” to move on to Mosinee.
Also qualifying for sectionals were Alex Johnson (3rd) in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of :17.03, Andrew Pathos (3rd) in the 3,200 meter event with a time of 10:42.53, Cade Hanson (4th) in the 1,600 meter run with a 4:47.45 and Corbin Verdon (4th) in the high jump with a height of 5’ 07”.
