MONDOVI — A fourth-place finish in last Tuesday’s Dunn-St. Croix conference golf tournament meant Glenwood City also placed fourth in the season’s final team standings.
The Hilltoppers shot a collective 392, which put them in fourth place in the 18-hole tournament (where scoring values for teams and individual golfers are doubled) held May 14 at the Valley Golf Course in Mondovi.
Glenwood City had been battling with Elk Mound the past few weeks for the number three spot in the conference standings.
The Mounders finished last Tuesday’s meet with 388 strokes – four better than the Toppers – allowing Elk Mound to overtake Glenwood City for third place in the final 6-team D-SC standings for 2019.
As it had in the previous five conference meets, Durand easily won the tournament with a low tally of 316 strokes to capture this year’s Dunn-St. Croix Conference golf championship with 48 points.
Spring Valley, last year’s team titlist, came in second in both the tournament and the final standings. The Cardinals shot a 353 in Mondovi to finish with a final ranked score of 39 points.
Teams and individual golfers receive ten points for each conference win, eight for second and so on. Those points are doubled in the conference tournament.
Elk Mound took third with 29, Glenwood City was a point behind at 28 for fourth followed by Mondovi in fifth with 12 and Colfax tallied just six points to finish last.
Glenwood City did have a bit of good news as Will Owen earned a spot on the all-conference second team after finishing tenth in Mondovi with a 93.
Owen tied teammate Dillon Hierlmeier, who also shot a 93.
Junior Ethan Hanson shot below the century mark turning in a 99 on the Valley Golf Course.
Alexa Holden shot a 107 and Owen Swenby carded a 109 to round out the Toppers’ varsity five.
Glenwood City competed in the WIAA Division 3 Cameron regional at Turtleback Golf Course in Rice Lake yesterday, May 21. The top four teams along with the top four individuals from non-qualifying teams will advance to sectional play in Cumberland next Tuesday, May 28. State will be held June 3 and 4 in Madison.
