ELK MOUND — The Elk Mound baseball team was able to grab a pair of home conference wins this past week in games against Elmwood/Plum City last Monday and Mondovi on Friday.
The Mounders were also scheduled to play a doubleheader in Glenwood City but heavy rains left the Hilltoppers’ field water-logged and forced yet another postponement.
The Mounders have been able to extend their winning streak to five straight games with the wins over EPC and Mondovi.
Elk Mound enjoyed back-to-back five-runs innings to start last Monday’s home game and went on to whitewash the Elmwood/Plum City Wolves. Elk Mound recorded seven RBIs against the Wolves in the 12-0 win with Cole Steinhorst leading the way with two.
It was a nail biter on Friday, May 10, for Elk Mound as it hosted the Mondovi Buffaloes and barely squeezed out a win in the seventh inning and finished with five strike outs and only three earned runs.
Elk Mound, who is 7-3 and sits in third place in conference and is 7-4 overall, started another busy week of baseball this past Monday, May 13, with an away game against Pepin/Alma in Pepin. Yesterday, the Mounders were in Boyceville and Elk Mound will play rival Colfax on Thursday, May 16. The Mounders will then finish out the regular season with a doubleheader in Glenwood City next Monday, May 20 and in Elmwood on Tuesday, May 21.
The baseball playoffs begin in Thursday, May 23.
After a rough start to the 2019 season, the Mounders baseball team has caught fire in the month of May. Highlighted by its 3-0 upset win over Boyceville, Elk Mound has won five straight including a 12-0 win over Elmwood/Plum City at home last Monday, May 6.
James Javanovich started and finished it off on the mound as he earned a no-hitter against the Wolves. He walked two and struck out four in 63 pitches.
The Mounders also made the most of their six hits to score a dozen runs in the shut-out at Village Park.
Cole Baskin hit a double while Ben Heath, Ryan Bohl, Nate Lew, Cole Steinhorst and Brett Lew each had a single in the game.
Cole Steinhorst led Elk Mound in RBIs as he racked up two against the Wolves in his one hit in three at bats and also scored two runs.
The EPC pitcher issued seven walks to the Mounders, four of which went to Blaze Todd and Ethan Kaanta. Both Todd and Kaanta managed to score twice for Elk Mound and had an on-base percentage of .667.
Also scoring for the Mounders were Nate Lew and Andrew Williams with two a piece and Ryan Bohl and Ben Heath each had one run.

The Mounders cut things a bit close in Friday evening’s, May 10 home game against Mondovi but pitcher James Javanovich earned the “W” in the 4-3 win over the Buffaloes.
Mondovi led 2-0 but Elk Mound tied it up in the third inning with two runs and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. The Buffaloes tied it in the sixth.
The Mounder would score the game-winning run in their final at bat of the seventh inning for the 4-3 victory.
Between Javanovich and Blaze Todd, Elk Mound was able to shut down Mondovi as the pair served up seven strikeouts and gave up only three walks and two earned runs. Javanovich, who got the throwing win, and also went one-of-three at the plate.
Hits were at a premium for both squads as Elk Mound finished with five and Mondovi tallied eight.
Chase Rhude, Ryan Bohl, Nate Lew, Ethan Kaanta and Javanovich had the Mounder hits.
Chase Rhude was the only Mounder to record an RBI against the Buffaloes, he was also one-of-three when up to bat and had two runs.
