BOYCEVILLE — Pitching, hitting and defense all came together for Glenwood City’s softball team last Tuesday when it visited Andy Pafko Memorial Park to take on host and rival Boyceville.
Maggie Wallin conjured up another round of mound magic, holding the Bulldogs to just three hits and a pair of runs and a whopping 12 strike outs against just two walks. She also spearheaded the Hilltoppers’ offensive assault on the Bulldogs, going three-for-four from the plate with a third-inning solo home run, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored to lift Glenwood City to a 13-2 win over Boyceville in the April 23 game that last five innings.
“Wallin had a big night on the mound,” said Toppers’ head coach Matthew Schutz.
And at the plate as well but she wasn’t alone.
Kaitlin Lee and Logan Hoitomt each picked a pair of hits for the Hilltoppers, who tallied ten hits in all. Lee had two singles in three at bats and scored three times and finished with two RBIs. Hoitomt went 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.
Delanie Fayerweather had just one hit, but it was a big one. The sophomore catcher belted a 2-RBI home run in the Toppers’ in the third inning just prior to Wallin’s four-bagger.
Anna Brigham had the Toppers other hit.
Glenwood City delivered the decisive scoring blows in the top of the second inning, scoring seven runs on two hits and four walks and a hit batsman. Two of the scores came after first basemen Kaitlin Lee reached base on an error allowing Bella Lawson and Ashlee Peterson to score. Wallin’s two-run double added to the inning’s scoring. The Hilltoppers sent 13 batters to the plate in their half of the second inning.
The Toppers batted through the order in the third frame as well in an inning highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Fayerweather and Wallin.
In all Glenwood City took advantage of the ten walks that Boyceille’s pitchers gave them to bring an early end to the contest. The Toppers added four more runs in the third and their final two in the fourth.
Boyceville’s only two runs of the game came in its final at bat in the bottom of the fifth. Emma Bygd reached base on a one-out walk and scored when Emma Ouellette doubled her home in the next at bat. Then with two outs, Jaida Peterson singled to drive Ouellette home for the Bulldogs final run.
Alyx Bloom had Boyceville’s other hit.
Hannah Johnson started on the mound for the Bulldogs and took the loss. Johnson surrendered seven hits, 11 runs and eight bases on balls to the Hilltoppers and struck out three in two-and-a-third innings of work. Ella Holden threw the final two-and-two-thirds innings for Boyceville and allowed three more hits and two runs with a pair of strike outs.
Glenwood City’s conference record improved to 6-1 with the victory while Boyceville fell to 1-5.
The Hilltoppers, who also rallied for a 4-3 win over Pepin/Alma last Friday, started a busy week of play this past Monday, April 29, with a non-conference game in Somerset and welcomed Durand to the Glenwood City field yesterday. Glenwood City will be on the road this Thursday, May 2 against the Spring Valley Cardinals and will return home on Friday, May 3 to host Colfax in a double header. Then next Monday, May 6 Glenwood City will play Durand at the former Arkansaw Middle School.
After splitting a double header with Colfax last Thursday, April 25 and beating Mondovi at home the following day, Boyceville then began a five-game road trip at Durand this past Monday, April 29. The Bulldogs will then travel to Pepin High School to take on the Eagles this Thursday, May 2 followed by a double header on May 3 against the Elk Mound Mounders.
