MONDOVI — Despite a five-run, sixth inning rally, Elk Mound fell a run short when they traveled to Mondovi to take on the Buffaloes in a Dunn-St. Croix baseball contest last Thursday, April 18.
Mondovi, who scored three runs in the bottom of the second and fourth innings, took a 6 to 1 lead into the sixth. The Mounders plated five runs in the top half of the frame to knot the game at six but the Buffaloes scored the game winner in the bottom half to take a 7-6 victory.
The loss evened Elk Mound’s conference mark at 1-1. The Mounders are 1-2 overall.
While the Mounders made the most of their six hits to score as many runs, they also committed five costly fielding errors which contributed to the loss. Mondovi finished with eight hits.
Blaze Todd started on the mound for Elk Mound and pitched five innings with four strikeouts, two walks and gave up seven hits and six runs, two of which were earned, in the no-decision.
James Javanovich relieved Todd in the sixth and surrendered a hit and the eventual game-winning run to take the loss. He had a strikeout and a walk.
Chase Rhude picked up two of the Mounders’ six hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate and was credited with two RBIs in Thursday’s game.
Brothers Nate and Brett Lew found their way around the bases for a run a piece. Nate was 1-of-4 at the plate with an RBI and walk while Brett went 1-for-2 with two walks.
Ethan Kaanta and Cole Steinhorst each scored a run for the Mounders. Kaanta had a RBI-double in three plate appearances. Steinhorst walked three times and was credited with an RBI.
Also scoring for the Mounders was Ryan Bohl, who walked and had a RBI.
It will be a busy week for Elk Mound with four games in an eight-day span. The Mounders were to host back-to-back games this past Monday and Tuesday with Spring Valley in town on April 22, and the Pepin/Alma Eagles visiting yesterday, April 23. Elk Mound will then travel to Spring Valley this Friday, April 26 for their second meeting in four days. Colfax will then play in Elk Mound next Monday, April 29.
