DURAND — The Elk Mound baseball team started its conference slate with a big victory.
The Mounders traveled to Durand April 9, to get in a game before the snow began on Wednesday afternoon canceling the rest of the week’s scheduled action.
Despite three errors, Elk Mound’s offense and the pitching of Blaze Todd was enough to earn an 8-2 win over the Durand last Tuesday on Wayne Field.
Todd struck out nine Durand batters, walked just one and allowed only five hits and a pair of runs in an 86-pitch, six-inning performance to get the pitching win. Although Todd did not get a hit, he did finish with a pair of stolen bases that led to two Elk Mound runs.
The Mounders’ offense also provided Todd with some support, as it collected eight runs on ten hits including five scores in the top of the first inning.
Andrew Williams and James Javanovich each collected a pair of hits in the game to lead the Mounders, who added two runs in the third and another in the seventh. Williams went 2-for-2 batting with a pair of RBIs and scored a run. Javanovich had two singles and three RBIs in four at bats.
Ryan Bohl and Brett Lew each finished with a double.
Bohl was walked on base and had a hit against the Panthers in his three plate appearances giving him a .333 batting average for the game.
In the seventh inning, James Javanovich switched up his role from outfielder to finding himself on the mound against the remaining Durand batters. Javanovich had a lone strikeout against Durand and was two-of-four at the plate.
Cole Steinhorst, Ethan Kaanta and Nate Lew each finished with a hit.
The Mounders hosted Glenwood City yesterday, Tuesday, April 16 and will travel to Mondovi this Thursday, April 18. Elk Mound then returns to its home field for games against Spring Valley on Monday, April 22, and Pepin/Alma on Tuesday, April 23.
All games are subject to change of location or date depending on weather and field conditions.
