ALMA — The Hilltoppers baseball team finally took to the field for their first game of the season last Friday evening, April 5, in Alma as it took on the Pepin/Alma Eagles, who were playing in their third game of the season.
“I was pleased with the effort and attitude,” said Glenwood City head coach Shane Strong. “This was the first time we had been on a field this season.”
Trailing 3-0 after three innings, Glenwood City made a game of it before falling 4-3 to the Eagles.
The pitching staff carried the load for Glenwood City as Gavin Janson and Hadin DeSmith took to the mound.
Left-handed pitcher Gavin Janson started things off for the Hilltoppers as he took the field against the Eagles and hoped to bring home a win for Glenwood City. Janson struck out two batters and walked three while giving up four earned runs.
“I thought our pitchers did a nice job throwing strikes Friday night,” explained Strong. “Last year we struggled giving up too many walks, but we pitched well.”
DeSmith made the move to the mound in the fourth inning to get the last out and was there the remainder of the contest, giving up only two walks in his two and one-third innings. DeSmith scored one of the Toppers’ three runs and had a single hit.
Brandyn Hallquist and Daniel Loring were the other two players to score for Glenwood City. Hallquist was one-of-three at the plate and Loring went one-of-two with a walk and a strikeout.
“We made a few mistakes in the field that cost us a run that could have made the difference in the game,” Strong stated. “I was proud how our kids battled back from a 3-0 early in the game. We only allowed one run after the second inning and we were able to come back with three of our own.”
The Hilltoppers made their way to Spring Valley last evening in a game that was originally scheduled for April 11 against the Cardinals, the reason for the change was due to the chance of snow on Thursday, April 11. Glenwood City will face the Colfax Vikings on Friday, April 12, and wrap up a busy week of play with a games next Monday, April 15 against Durand and Tuesday, April 16 in Elk Mound.
