ELK MOUND — After a rough 2018 season, the Elk Mound boys’ golf squad is looking to get back into the swing of things with the start of the new season.
“We lost a lot of experienced golfers, but not a lot of varsity experience,” said Mounders head coach Brandon Powell.
Coach Powell is in his fourth year coaching the Mounders’ golf team.
With Elk Mound’s best performance coming at the end of the 2018 season at the WIAA Division 2 regional meet in Arcadia, the Mounders will need to find a solution to start winning some meets right away in 2019.
The Mounders do return all of their letter winners from last season including: Dillon McLaughlin, Colton Ward, Max Marquardt, Marcus Kinblom, Ethan Rubenzer and Kaitlin Schiferl.
In last season’s regional, Rubenzer and Marquardt were the top two finishers in 22nd and 23rd place respectively. Rubenzer finished the course with a 91, 20 over par, and Marquardt finished with a 92 after shooting a 45 and 47 on the front and back nine.
“We need to keep our scores in the 40’s this year individually and compete in the top half of the conference,” said Powell.
The Mounders will look to five incoming freshmen, according to Powell, who look to have good potential on the links.
But with each team comes strength and weaknesses. This year Powell believes the strength of the Mounders is the experience they have on the course while their weakness is being able to stay consistent with their shots.
It is Coach Powell’s belief that the teams to watch this season in the Dunn-St. Croix will be defending champion Spring Valley along with Durand and Mondovi as they are always tough and return some good players to the program.
The Mounders were scheduled to get their season underway, weather permitting, with a conference meet against Colfax, Durand, Glenwood City, Mondovi and Spring Valley last evening, Tuesday, at Whitetail Golf Course. Elk Mound then makes their way to the Pheasant Hills Golf Course in Baldwin-Woodville for a two-day invitational on April 12 and 13 which will be followed by another D-SC meet in Spring Valley on Tuesday, April 16.
