MADISON — He’s done it again!
Glenwood City eighth-grader and youth wrestler Ian Radintz claimed his second kids folkstyle state wrestling championship in three years.
Radintz was part of Glenwood City youth wrestling’s 10-member contingent that qualified and competed in the 2019 Wisconsin Wrestling Federation (WWF) Kids Folkstyle State Championships held March 22 and 23 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
Radintz, who won the 2017 state folkstyle title at 70 pounds, finished a perfect 4-0 in his 16-boy bracket to win the state title at 85 pounds for boys born in 2004-05.
Ian, the son of Matt and Angie Radintz, opened this year’s state tournament with a 12-6 decision over Dylan Powell of Brookwood. He then scored a pin fall (2:05) against his quarterfinal’s opponent Liam Pionkowski of the West Bend Wildcats. In the semifinal, Radintz again dispatched his competition, Bay Port’s Owen Noel, via fall in 2:31. In the championship match, Radintz needed overtime to take the gold, defeating Luke Dux of Cross Trained Weigh-In Club 5-3 by sudden victory.
Radintz also won a WWF Freestyle state title at 77-pounds last June in Wisconsin Dells.
Joining Radintz at this year’s state meet were nine other Hilltoppers including Ian’s younger brother Elliot Radintz (boys born 2010-11, 57 lbs.), Waylon Fry (boys born 2010-11, 63 lbs.), Landon Standaert (boys born 2008-09, 57 lbs.), Landon Obermueller (boys born 2008-09, 78 lbs.), Wyatt Unser (boys born 2006-07, 79 lbs.), Andrew Blaser (boys born 2006-07, 115 lbs.), Gabe Knops (boys born 2004-05, 120 lbs.), Trenton McNamara (boys born 2004-05, 210 lbs.) and Savanna Millermon (girls born 2004-05, 85 pounds).
Gabe Knops and Savanna Millermon joined Ian Radintz on the state awards podium.
Despite losing her first two state bouts, Millermon came through the wrestlebacks to finish with the bronze trophy after pinning her 3rd-place opponent Kaya Howard of Sauk Prairie in 46 seconds.
Knops went 3-2 in his 120-pound state bracket to finish in fourth place. Knops opened with a pair of victories (a decision and a pin) before being pinned in the semifinals. But Gabe rebounded for a 6-2 decision over Aaron Cummings of Askren Wrestling Academy in the consolation semifinals. Wisconsin Rapids’ Brett Back scored a pin at 2:30 to beat Knops in the third-place match.
The Landons, Standaert and Obermueller, both finished the double-elimination tournament with 2-2 marks, Waylon Fry and Wyatt Unser were 1-2 and Elliot Radintz, Andrew Blaser and Trenton McNamara each went 0-2.
