University of Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestler and 2018 Boyceville High School graduate Garrett Joles placed first in the National Collegiate Open held Saturday, March 2 in Smyrna, Delaware.
Joles, a redshirt freshman for the U of M, charged his way through the 197-pound bracket with three bonus point victories including a 16-4 major decision in the championship match where he defeated Chasen Blair of North Carolina. Joles, who finished 4-0, outscored his opponents 44-7 to win his first tournament of the season.
Wrestling unattached, Joles opened the National Collegiate Open with a 10-1 major decision over Cole Forrester of Air Force Prep in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Joles scored a 15-0 technical fall shut out against Mason Fischella of Appalachian State. Joles’ semifinal match against Mike Bulkin was the closest of his tournament as he nipped the Columbia wrestler 3-2 to gain a spot in the final. There, the Boyceville graduate scored a 12-point major decision over Chasen Blair to take home first place.
Fellow Minnesota teammate Brayton Lee, a freshman from Brownsburg, Indiana, joined Joles in the tournament and finished 5-0 to win the 149-pound title.
According to the Golden Gophers wrestling website, Joles is 12-7 this season and 0-2 in the Big Ten. He finished fifth after going 3-2 at the University of Northern Iowa Open and was third at he Bison Open after finishing 3-1.
Joles is a two-time WIAA state individual wrestling champion and a two-time state runner-up. He is also a four-time All-American, All-State (Wisconsin) and All-Conference (Dunn-St. Croix) honoree. Joles was also named to Wisconsin’s All-State Academic wrestling team all four years in high school.
He is the son of Harry and Kathy Joles.
