PRESCOTT — The Mounder boys’ basketball team traveled to Prescott on December 21 to take on last season WIAA Division 3 state champion Prescott Cardinals.
Prescott built up a solid lead that had the Mounders battling the rest of the way that resulted in a loss of 67-34 for Elk Mound.
“I thought we came out of the gate really well matching them possession by possession,” stated Mounders coach Michael Kessler. “We went through a stretch of about eight minutes where we did not put the ball through the basket.”
Prescott kept the Mounders quiet during the first half allowing Elk Mound a mere 13 points in the first 18 minutes of play and only 21 points in the second half.
Marcus Kinblom led the way for the Mounder boys putting in nine points total. Kinblom netted four doubles and a single bonus shot as well as having four rebounds, two assists and a steal against the Cardinals.
Elk Mound teammates Nate Lew and Colton Ward made their way to the net for seven points a piece. Lew hit the glass for two doubles and was three-of-four from the charity stripe, while Ward put up two doubles and a trey. The pair of Mounders each had two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
“Prescott made some shots and built up a solid lead,” explained Kessler. “We battled the rest of the way, but could never close that deficit that we put ourselves in from the first half.”
Senior forward, Brett Lew, was subdued throughout the game with a mere five points in the two 18 minute halves. Lew netted a double and triple along with four rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
Adding to the Mounders total were Rian Flynn and Cade Hanson with four points between the pair off a couple doubles. Flynn snagged the ball for a steal and Hanson added two steals of his own.
Elk Mound hosted Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau in a non-conference contest Friday, December 28 and will be on the road to Spring Valley for a conference match up on January 4 and the following Monday, January 7, the Mounders play host to the St. Croix Central Panthers.
