DURAND — The Hilltopper boys’ basketball team hit the court twice last week splitting conference games against Durand and Colfax.
The Toppers pulled out a five-point win in Durand last Tuesday against the Panthers only to be pummeled in a home contest with Colfax last Friday.
Glenwood City made the December 11 trek to Durand a successful one as the Hilltoppers clinched their first conference victory with a 57-52 win over the Panthers.
Three days later, the Toppers welcomed the Colfax Vikings for a Friday, December 14 contest. In an eerily similar pattern and outcome to the previous evening’s game played in Glenwood City between the Glenwood City and Colfax girls, Colfax bolted to a big early lead and then added to it in the second half for a 73-48 win.
The Toppers are currently 1-2 in the Dunn-St. Croix and 2-4 overall.
Glenwood City, who had a home game with Baldwin-Woodville last night (Dec. 18), will host its annual holiday tournament on Thursday, December 27 and Friday, December 28. They will play Ellsworth at 5 pm Thursday and Somerset at 7 pm on Friday. Durand
Glenwood City clinched a big 57-52 conference win, its first of the season, at the home of the Durand Panthers last Tuesday, December 11.
“It was a great game start to finish, I thought for the first time all year we played two good halves of basketball,” said Hilltoppers’ head coach Tristan Kittilson.
Tanner Davis had an exceptional game on both ends of the floor, said Kittilson, putting up a new season high of 21 points against the Panthers. Davis netted six doubles and three triples and had seven boards in the December 11 win.
Senior Hadin DeSmith hit the nets for an additional 17 points in the Toppers victory. DeSmith hit the boards for six doubles, netted a trey and was four-of-eleven from the foul line.
Glenwood City led 30-19 at half.
Adding to Glenwood City’s scoring totals were teammates Dillon Hierlmeier with seven points, Brandyn Hallquist netted a trey and a free throw for four, Gavin Janson and Ethan Hanson tacked on three points a piece and Dan Loring contributed two foul shots.
“It was a great team win with all of our players making big plays at times and big contributors,” coach Kittilson stated. “We are looking to carry that momentum into Friday’s game vs Colfax!”

Unfortunately, any momentum from the Durand contest had faded by the time Colfax made its way to Glenwood City on Friday, December 14.
Much like their female counterparts had done to the Toppers the previous evening, the Vikings boys enjoyed a big offensive effort as they outscored the Toppers in both halves for the 73-48 win.
The Vikings got off to an 8-0 run against the Hilltoppers before Hadin DeSmith would sink his first double of the evening and put the Toppers on the board 8-2.
DeSmith co-led Glenwood City with 13 points off of six doubles and was one-of-four from the charity stripe, helping lead the Toppers as well was Gavin Janson netting three triples and a pair of doubles.
In the second half, the Toppers brought the score to within a 12 points, 50-38, before the Vikings hit the gas once more to take the win.
Sophomore guard, Brandyn Hallquist, came alive for Glenwood City in the second half netting three triples and was one-of-three from the foul line.
Eleven minutes into the second half the Toppers would loose senior player Dillon Hierlmeier after his fifth foul of the evening, Hierlmeier put up a pair of doubles in the first half and got one-of-one from the line.
The last two points for the Hilltoppers would come after Gavin Janson snagged the rebound and hit the glass for the double.
Ethan Hanson and Tanner Davis contributed seven points between the pair from two doubles and a triple.
