GLENWOOD CITY — Clean slate, perfect slate!
Glenwood City wrestler Andy Grant began his sophomore season just like last year, running the tables at the 22nd annual John Timm Duals held at the high school last Saturday, December 1.
Grant was the lone Hilltopper and one of a dozen wrestlers to finish the six-team, dual-style tournament with an unblemished 5-0 record.
Although Grant was the only unbeaten wrestler for Glenwood City on the day, five other Hilltoppers posted winning records.
Freshman Thomas Moede just fell short on his bid for five victories when he dropped his final match of the tournament and finished 4-1. Senior Dakota Dean-Immerman picked up three forfeits at 195 to go 3-1 Another senior Bryce Fayerweather (220/285) and juniors Tucker Lagerstrom (182) and Cody Weeks (170) all posted marks of 3-2 while Nick Melendrez came out even, 2-2, in his matches at 160 pounds.
Unfortunately, individual successes once again did not translate into team victories for Glenwood City as it forfeited five to six weight classes in each dual and finished fifth for a third consecutive year with just one win – a 48-30 win over Somerset in the fourth round – in the Toppers’ five tournament duals.
The Toppers suffered setbacks to Triton, MN (48-24), Bloomer/Colfax (42-36), Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal (57-19) and Spooner (61-12).
“We understand that we will struggle as a dual team, so we are focusing on individual improvement,” said Shane Strong, Glenwood City’s head wrestling coach.
Grant was barely challenged throughout Saturday’s tournament as he won four of his five matches at 120 pounds by falls, the other came via a forfeit.
“Andy Grant had a very good tournament,” noted Strong. “He was aggressive and on the attack all day.
Thomas Moede’s high school and varsity debut performance was excellent.
“Thomas Moede wrestled well for his first varsity tournament. I thought he went after his leg attacks early and often,” said Coach Strong of Moede, who had a major decision and pin among his four victories.
Fayerweather, Lagerstrom and Weeks all finished with a pair of pins among their three wins.
“Tucker Lagerstrom and Bryce Fayerweather both looked good in their matches,” Strong commentated.
“We are still making little mistakes that cost us points in key situations,” added Strong.
Junior Andrew Berends in his first year of wrestling finished 1-2 at heavyweight while sophomore Will Eggert went 0-5 at 132 pounds.
Spooner won the team title with a 5-0 finish as it unseated three-time reigning champion Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal who went 4-1 to finish as the runner-up. Bloomer/Colfax placed third with a 3-2 mark, Triton, MN came in fourth at 2-3, the Toppers were fifth with a 1-4 record and Somerset finished with a win to take sixth.
Glenwood City wrestled in Luck last evening and will host Turtle Lake/Clayton in a dual next Tuesday, December 11.
