Elk Mound’s Cade Hanson qualifies for third straight State Cross Country Championship

COLBY — Elk Mound’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams traveled the 74 miles to Colby last Saturday morning, October 20, to compete for the first time in the WIAA Division 2 Sectionals.

In previous years, Elk Mound has always competed in Division 3.

The Mounder boys took fourth place with 129 points, finishing behind G-E-T who took first and runner-up La Crosse Logan.

Cade Hanson will represent the Mounders at the WIAA State Championship for a third consecutive year after the junior finished in third place for Elk Mound with a time of 17:40.2.

Hanson is the only runner for the Mounders to qualify for this year’s state championships which will be held this Saturday, October 27 at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

Over a minute after Hanson finished, Andrew Pathos crossed the line for the Elk Mound boys with a time of 19:04.1 to take 20th place.

Finishing four seconds after Pathos was runner Lukas Wagner in 25th place and a time of 19:09.0, followed by Seth Hazen with a time of 19:33.1 in 37th place. Rounding out the scoring runners for Elk Mound was Kegan McRea in 44th place and a time of 19:47.1.

Rounding out the runners for Elk Mound was Brady Hunsnucker and Brennen Zais in 66th and 75th place with times of 20:52.6 and 21:21.8.

Elk Mound’s girls team seemed to struggle at the Division 2 Sectionals coming in at sixth place with 193 points.

Medford Area took first place with 47 points followed by Wisconsin Dells in second place with 76 points.

Alana Plaszcz and Kirstin Martinson were first to cross the finish line for Elk Mound in 22nd and 35th place respectively with times of 22:35.4 and 23:16.9.

Following close behind Martinson was runner Danielle Olson with a time of 23:57.6 for 42nd place.

Crossing the finish line next for the Mounder girls was Victoria Fasbender with a time of 24:01.4 for 44th place, Olivia Schreiber crossed eight seconds later in 50th place and a time of 24:10.0.

Wrapping it up for Elk Mound’s girls team were runners Brook Plaszcz and Paige Romanowski in 61st and 75th place with times of 25:03.2 and 25:49.8.
