With two meets this past week, Glenwood City head coach Matthew Schutz continues to see improvement in his runners but will it be enough as they head to conference meet on Thursday?
The Hilltoppers started the previous week at an invitational in Amery. “I thought both teams made a lot of progress at the Amery meet,” stated Schutz. “Austin and Jabin both ran in the low 19s looking for them to break into the 18s as we head to Eau Claire and Boyceville. The time gap between our 1st and 5th runners for scoring is growing smaller as well.”
Junior, Jabin Hojem was the first Topper to cross the finish line in the 31st spot with a time of 19:21.93. Freshman Austin Nelson was just three places behind in 34th with a time of 19:25.77. Elijah Simmons and Thomas Moede came in 52nd & 53rd respectively. Rounding out the top five was Brendan Booth with a 65th place finish.
“As for the girls, we basically ran two groups for the majority of the race to help push a few runners to run faster and longer. Bella, Izzy, and Emily came in the top 15, while Kendall, Azra, and Sam came in within 30 seconds of one another to complete the scoring. We are trying to get all of our top 7 into competition mode as we head to conference. Even having a few runners drop back on their starting pace, the team placed well taking second and only being 13 points behind the winning team, Amery,” remarked Schutz.
Freshman, Bella Simmons grabbed a 7th place finish with a time of 21:41.85 while Junior Izzy Williams was right behind in 8th. Emily Bethell came in 12th overall. Kendall Schutz, Azra Ibrahimagic and Sam Peterson finished 27th, 29th and 30th respectively.
On Saturday, October 6th the Toppers took part in the Old Abe Invitational in Eau Claire. Schutz stated, “Even though half of the teams were Division 1, the varsity girls team put on a good showing beating out the other D3 schools that competed. Bella Simmons had an amazing run coming in 22nd.”
Bella’s 22nd place finish was over a minute faster than her race in Amery. With a time of 20:26.5 she once again lead the Topper girls to the finish line. Next in for the Hilltoppers was Izzy Williams in 44th place, followed by Emily Bethell in 60th with Kendall Schutz just three places back in 63rd. Azra Ibrahimagic, Gabby Moede and Sam Peterson, who finished in that order were the rest of the varsity to compete.
For the boys, coach Schutz stated, “The boys struggled some and will need to refocus as they head into the conference race.” Despite this comment most of the boys ran their personal best for the season with Jabin Hojem leading the way in the 82nd spot with a time of 19:10.3. Austin Nelson was right behind in the 83rd spot. For this race Moede and Simmons flip flopped and Moede came in 104 with Simmons close behind in the 108th spot. Booth once again took the fifth spot for the team with Henry Wallin close on his heels.
