GLENWOOD CITY – The Topper Ladies volleyball squad swept its match against the Northwestern Tigers last Tuesday, September 4 in three sets to earn its first win of the season.
Playing at home, an amped-up Hilltopper team won the first two sets quite handily and the third set was back and forth until late when the Toppers ran off the last six points to take the set and the match with scores of 25-9, 25-13 and 25-20.
“The last game got a little closer than we wanted it to, but the ladies did a great job. It was a good win and we needed it,” head coach Christa Edin stated.
With an offense that has struggled since the start of the season Edin was proud to see her Topper team implementing things they had been pushing the girls on.
Delaney Quinn led the Hilltoppers in attack with eight kills and six digs, Madelyn Oehlke contributed five more kills, Michaela Nyhus and Jatelyn Johnson tacked on two kills a piece as well.
Leading the defense Tressa Peskar had seven digs, Oehlke tacked on six more and Bella Rassbach added four more.
Michaela Nyhus also had one solo block while Alexis Curvello had an assisted block and one reception. Peskar contributed two more receptions in the Toppers’ win against the Tigers.
“The girls have been working hard, but still have plenty of work to do. Proud of them,” commented Edin on the team’s first victory in 2018.
The Hilltoppers will have had more than a week off before trekking to Mondovi to take on the Buffaloes tomorrow (Thursday, September 13) in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference opener.
