HAMMOND — Thursday, August 30th was a perfect night for running as the Hilltopper Cross Country team headed to Hammond to race at the St. Croix Central invitational. It was a good night for the girls as they finished fifth in a field of twelve teams, most of which were Division 2.

For the girls the host team took first place honors with a team score of 28. They were followed by New Richmond, Elk Mound and Durand. The Toppers had a team score of 154 for their fifth place finish. Freshman Bella Simmons was the first Hilltopper to cross the line in 16th place with a time of 23:07. Izzy Williams was next followed by Gabby Moede, Kendall Schutz and Emily Bethell.

The boys, with only six runners competing, finished in 10th place out of 13 teams. Again the host took first place. The SCC boys had a team score of 72. The rest of the top five for the boys were New Richmond, Durand, Bloomer and Ellsworth, respectively.

In his first race, freshman Austin Nelson lead the Hilltoppers to the finish line in the 31st spot in a time of 20:08. Fellow freshman, Thomas Moede was next followed by Elijah Simmons, Brendan Booth, Henry Wallin and John Hager.

“Both the boys and girls teams rebounded from their mediocre performance at their first meet in Boyceville” commented Glenwood head coach, Matthew Schutz.  “They came to race at SCC with every one of them dropping times from their first race, some significantly.  Our top runners at SCC, Austin Nelson and Bella Simmons, had great first runs of the season as they were not able to participate in Boyceville.  It will be great to see how they progress which will certainly push their teammates too.”

The Hilltoppers next competition will be on Thursday, September 6th when they travel to Cameron where they will face 18 other teams. Then on Tuesday, September 11th they travel north to Rice Lake to compete in their biggest meet with over 35 teams running.
