Glenwood City Toppers struggle to score, defend in loss to Darlington

By Amber Hayden

GALE-ETTRICK-TREMEALEAU — For Coach Strong and the Hilltopper football team the season started with a struggle against the Darlington Redbirds on August 17.

“I wanted to play someone strong to open the season,” commented Strong on the 34-0 loss to the Redbirds.

The team faced a tough Darlington team that is rich with tradition. The Redbirds have won four consecutive state championships (2013-2016) and have 597 wins in a storied 93-year history according to the Hilltopper coach.

Hadin DeSmith managed only three attempted passes for 18 yards in the game, he also put down 18 yards rushing during Friday night’s game.

“We moved the ball in the red zone five times, but just couldn’t score,” Strong explained.

Caleb Peterson and Dan Loring were the teams driving force for the rush game, with 26 attempts for 163 yards of the 222 yards total the team managed in the game. Peterson had 85 yards on ten hauls while Loring added 78 yards on 16 carries. Loring also managed one reception in the game for a gain of 18 yards.

Coach Strong believes there were far too many mental mistakes for the team and will be talking with them on how to convert the third down opportunities they will face in upcoming games.

The team struggled defensively during the first half of the game in which 28 of the Redbird’s points were scored.

It looked as there was improvements made during the second half as Darlington was allowed only six points in the fourth quarter.

“We need to be more disciplined in our responsibilities, and I’m confident we can improve and clean up our mistakes,” commented Strong.

According to Strong Caleb Peterson, Dan Loring and Hadin DeSmith all played tough football and demonstrated great effort throughout the whole game.

The Hilltoppers face the Amery Warriors on the gridiron this Friday, August 24 at 7 p.m. for their first home game of the season.
