Toppers qualify for golf sectional

WEBSTER — A pair of top 15 finishers helped the Glenwood City golf team secure the fourth and final berth to sectional tournament.

Senior Collin Schone shot an 85 on the par-72 Voyager Village Golf Course in Danbury, WI to finish in a seventh-place tie and junior Will Owen grabbed a share of 13th with a 92 to help guide the Hilltoppers to a fourth-place showing at last Tuesday’s WIAA Division 3 golf regional hosted by Webster.

The finish, a 382-stroke team performance, earned Glenwood City a spot in yesterday’s (Tuesday, May 29) sectional tournament hosted by Luck/Frederic at the Frederic Golf Course.

This week’s host, Luck/Frederic, won the overall regional championship at the May 22 meet, which featured eight Lakeland Conference squads among the 10-team field, with a low team score of 343. Grantsburg tallied a 371 to take second with Unity finishing just a stroke back at 372 for third place. Those three along with Glenwood City advanced to the Frederic sectional tournament.

The top four individuals from non-qualifying teams will also competed in the sectional competition.

Schone sizzled through the course’s first nine holes and recorded a 39, which included pars on holes 3, 8 and 9 and a birdie on 4, for the second best start in last Tuesday’s Webster regional. The senior shot a 46 on the final nine holes to finish with a 85 which put him in a tie for seventh with Unity junior Hunter Robinson.

GC junior Will Owen carded a pair of 46s for a final score of 92 and in a three-way tie for 13th place. Owen shot a 2 on the par-3 eighth hole for a birdie and parred number 13, another par-3 hole.

Dillon Hierlmeier had pars on 13 and 17 and finished with a 101. The junior opened with a 53 but cut five strokes of his score on the back nine.

Sophomore Ethan Hanson shot a 50 on the front nine and a 54 on the final nine holes to tally a score of 104. Hanson parred holes 5 and 9.

Riley Schutz completed the Toppers varsity five set. The senior signed off on a tally of 111 after completing the 18-hole meet. Schutz parred the number four hole to finish with a 52 on the front nine holes and turned in a 59 on the final nine.
