COLFAX — Heading into last Monday’s Dunn-St. Croix conference tournament at Whitetail Golf Course near Colfax, the Glenwood City golf team was holding a slim lead over Mondovi for third place.
The Hilltoppers shot a 377 to finish fourth in meet which opened the door for the Buffaloes who charged through to take third with a 346.
The 18-hole tournament, where points values in the individual and team competitions are doubled, saw Spring Valley shoot a low score of 334 strokes to overtake Durand and win the conference championship. The Panthers, who sat atop the standings coming into last Monday’s tournament, scored a 345 to finish second. Mondovi claimed third with a 346, Glenwood City was fourth with a 377 followed by Elk Mound at 397 and Colfax at 409.
Ironically, how the teams placed in the conference tournament was also their finish in the final conference standings. Spring Valley scored 50 points to win the team title for a second consecutive year. Durand finished second with 49 points, Mondovi edged Glenwood City for third with 32 points to 31, Elk Mound was fifth with 18 and Colfax came in sixth with nine points.
Collin Schone was once again the leader on the Hilltoppers’ team. The senior finished with a 91, scoring a 43 on the front nine and a 48 on the back nine. For his efforts this season, Schone earned a spot on the all-conference’s second team.
Three other Glenwood golfers finished within five strokes of Schone.
Will Owen carded a 94 with a pair of 47s. Ethan Hanson and Dillon Hierlmeier each shot a 96 over the 18-hole meet. Hanson cut two strokes off his front-nine 49 to finish with a 47. Hierlmeier shot a 43 on the opening nine but slipped a bit on the back nine to finish with a 52.
Riley Schutz rounded out the Toppers’ varsity five with a 110, scoring a 57 and a 53.
Glenwood City opened WIAA Division 3 tournament play yesterday (Tuesday, May 22) at the regional competition in Webster. The top four teams and top four individuals from non-qualifying teams will move on to the sectional tournament next Tuesday, May 29 at the Frederic Golf Course.
