Some years ago River Falls wanted to put in a new airport and the State Aeronautics Commission insisted that it be located no more than 1 and 1/2 miles from the center of town. The City favored either of two locations that were 5-6 miles from town, but the SAC even went so far as to put money down on the property they selected.
The SAC was jamming their choice down our throat. The SAC theory is that the use factor drops off if the airport was further than 1 and 1/2 miles away from the center of town. This location was very unacceptable to the city as it was annoying to the university campus and churches in town didn’t like it because student lessons were given from 8 am to 6 pm Saturdays and Sundays.
To make a long story short, The City Attorney at the time was Les Gaylord, son of a Methodist minister. Atty Gaylord was a very able attorney and actually took on the SAC in court and WON on behalf of the city.
My point to you is to not be afraid of taking on the DNR, over this water quality issue in your editorial of Wed. August 26, 2015. They can be beaten and should be.
