LTE – Mervin Moen – 10-1-2014

Dear Staff:

I was not going to reorder a gift subscription to your paper but I became interested to read about grandchildren of my former students. I was a teacher at Boyceville from 1958-1967.

I wrote much of the Press Reporter for Don Halverson. He told me for 9 years of writing he would give me a free lifetime subscription to his paper.  I am not requesting that now.

I started the wrestling program at BHS. We became a regional power even though we practiced in a very cold village hall. I eventually became a school superintendent for 13 years in St. Croix Falls and 15 years in Cumberland. Boyceville’s current coach Jamie Olson matriculated at Cumberland. I could not find him a job in our system so he took a job in Boyceville. I also coached football at Boyceville. In 1962-63 we were undefeated and untied and state ranked. At one time we were 26-3-0.

I also coached baseball. Our 9 year record was 73 wins and 27 losses with nine losses in one year. The team won four conference championships three district and one sub-sectional. The team also had two second place finishes. The picture you ran in the paper was for the year preceding my coaching stint.

We also combined teams with Glenwood City and played a 20+ game summer legion series.

Including wrestling the teams won 75% of all contests played.

Just thought I would bring you up to date on a 9 year stint at BHS. I also advised the yearbook.

Yours truly,
Mervin Moen
