DURAND — While Glenwood City finished with a slight edge in hits – 8 to 7 – when it opened the 2025 softball season at Dunn-St. Croix foe Durand-Arkansaw last Thursday, April 3, the scoreboard at Tarrant Park showed that the host Panthers had won in a shutout.
The Hilltoppers were unable to convert any of their hits into runs as they were blanked 8-0 by Durand-Arkansaw in the conference opener for both squads.
Five Glenwood City errors assisted Durand-Arkansaw in claiming the win.
The Panthers scored at least one run in all six of the innings they went to bat including two runs in the third and fifth frames.
Isabel Davis and Kiley Leduc accounted for half of Glenwood City’s eight hits as the pair both finished with two hits in three plate appearances. One of Leduc’s hit went for a double. Emma Bliese, Brooklyn Brite, Jenna McCarthy and Elizabeth Lawson each picked up a single to account for the Toppers’ other hits.
Kirah Krueger, who started in the pitching circle for the Toppers and went the distance, took the loss as she surrendered all eight Panther runs on seven hits. She struck out seven and walked three.
Durand-Arkansaw had three batters finish the contest with two hits. Panthers’ pitcher Kaci Brunkow also went the distance, scattering eight hits without surrendering a run or walk and struck out a half dozen Glenwood City batters to earn the win.
Glenwood City (0-1, 0-1), whose originally scheduled home opener against Mondovi this past Monday was postponed until April 21 due to cold temperatures, hosted Turtle Lake/Clayton yesterday. The Toppers will begin a two-game road trip with a visit to Elk Mound this Thursday, April 10 followed by an appearance in Spring Valley next Monday, April 14.
