The Elk Mound baseball team got off to a quick start last week with a pair of weekend wins over non-conference competition.
After cold weather and snow canceled their scheduled April 1 season opening clash of conference champions in Hammond versus St. Croix Central (champs of the Middle Border), Elk Mound had to wait a few more days to get its season underway.
The Mounders traveled to Arcadia Friday, April 4 where it scored a 10-3 victory over the Raiders which saw the locals collect 11 hits and six stolen bases.
The offense followed with another strong performance when it hosted Fall Creek the following day. Elk Mound registered another 11 hits including a home run off the bat of Ian Gerrits that helped lift the Mounders to a 14-5 win over the Crickets.
Elk Mound will look to add some more wins to its 2-0 start this week. The Mounders, who won the Dunn-St. Croix Conference crown with a 14-0 record a season ago, began the defense of that title when it traveled to Boyceville this past Monday. Elk Mound then hosts Glenwood City and Bloomer (non-conference) on back-to-back days this Thursday and Friday, April 10 and 11. Next Monday, April 14, Elk Mound will be in Colfax.
Arcadia
Elk Mound took an early 3-0 advantage over host Arcadia in last Friday’s contest before the Raiders scored a run in the bottom half of the third.
The Mounders responded with four scores in the fourth and then put another three runs aross home plate in the fifth as they went on to claim a 10-3 victory in its season opener.
The Mounders finished with 11 hits led by a 3-for-4 performance from junior Victor Noller who also scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. Ian Gerrits and Brayden Borek both had a pair of hits in four plate appearances. Also picking up a hit for Elk Mound were Will Thatcher, Kamron Diermeier, Kaden Moyer and Peyton Vieth. Moyer also finished with three of the team’s eight RBIs while Thatcher tallied a pair.
Quentin Spehle went four and a third innings on the mound to earn the win for the Mounders. He allowed just two Raider runs on four hits, struck out seven and walked only two. Noller tossed two and a third frames and surrendered a run on two hits, walked three and had a pair of strike outs. Kaden Moyer threw a third of an inning and tallied a strike out.
The Mounders, who did have three errors, stole six bases with Dylan Plets and Diermeier picking up two each.
Fall Creek
The next day, Elk Mound returned home where it came up with another 11 hits and a 14-5 win over Fall Creek in its home opener at Village Park on Saturday, April 5.
With the non-conference game knotted at three runs each after three innings of play, the Mounders used an eight-run fourth inning to break open the contest. After the Crickets responded with a pair of runs in the fifth, Elk Mound added another run in the bottom half of the frame and then two more in the sixth to secure the nine-run win.
Brayden Borek earned the pitching victory for the Mounders as he allowed three hits and three runs in three innings of work which included a trio of strike outs and bases on balls. Diermeier and Moyer each tossed a pair of innings. Deuces were wild for Diermeier as he gave up two runs on two hits and finished with a pair of walks and strike outs. Moyer pitched a pair of scoreless and hitless innings despite giving up four bases on balls.
Peyton Vieth led the Mounder offense with a perfect day at the plate. He finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Diermeier, who scored three runs and stole two bases, and Noller each tallied a pair of hits in their plate appearance. Ian Gerrits had just one hit in the contest, but it was a big one as he launched a home run and finished with four of Elk Mound’s ten RBIs.
